🆕 New Beta Feature: Countdown Display for Plan Updates

Just an fyi, the Updating plan has been spinning all day. And my two completed workouts from today have no post workout review from Athletica. I did complete my RPE, feeling and comments for each session. Not sure if I am stuck in a perceptual loop, or just need to give the system more time.

Have you ever used a tool like Power Breathe or BreatheBetter bag to improve your lung function?

Hi, I use the Isocapnic BWB and I have used it with clients (athletic and non-athletic) to address respiratory limitations. Prior to that I used the Spirotiger, which is substantially more costly. Essentially, it’s like strength training, motor learning and/or endurance training for the respiratory muscles. I think the “success” of the device depends on the goal. So, assessment is crucial. For example, some people may have limited FVC or FEV1 relative to norm so the goal would be to increase volume. I saw that with an older client post-Covid. On the other hand, maybe the individual has the structural volume but isn’t able to “use it” during exercise. In this case I see a low relative tidal volume (e.g. using 2L with a capacity of 4L) so we use the device to work on it. Another common scenario is when folks hit VT2, volume or efficiency of breathing drops off. In this case, it’s with the high frequency of breathing. So, you could use the device to train the desired volume at the given frequency. There are more direct training strategies, like using it in the “rest” portion of interval training or to simulate altitude (stick on a pulse monitor). Like the Spirotiger, I liked the Isocapnic device over the other devices because you can train different functions and do a full workout (it manages the CO2 so you don’t get lightheaded). For example, some are resistive devices only or you can only do a short spurt. Cheers, J

Useful tips from recent updates

Hi, Marjaana! I also want to add my dog walking (without a dog though). Cannot find how to do it. I click “+Add” and choose “Create custom”. Then I can only choose one date from the calendar view.

Training framework for a 1000km Ultra Run

Nice one ! Reminds me a bit of my return-to-orienteering story. I stopped competitive orienteering for 20 years. I was a German Junior National Team runner and this month 2016 I returned to the sport here in Ireland. A lot has changed since, but not the essence of the sport. So in October 2016 I entered the British Classic Distance championship in the male 21 Elite group. All the national team runners from both the UK and Ireland used this as their selection races ( all aged in their early 20s) I was 40 at this point. I came last in over 3 hours in the forest, and about 1.5 hours behind the winning time. I was cold, wet, hungry and thought I was only out for 90 mins. The feeling I had when I realised what happened, 3 hours in the forest … I was so happy, smiling form ear-to-ear. That was priceless. So what did I learn from it? I need to do this more often: fail, analyse and learn. To get better at it What can anyone else learn from it? I don’t know - maybe just go a bit further than you think you’d go. You might surprise yourself.
