If you are a bit of a worry-wart, you will probably want to cut the slots at an angle, so the 'shackle' can only be released once the noodle is rotated to a strange angle and the brake is squeezed. This ought to pretty well eliminate any chance of an unintentional release.

It's been called into use on a side wall that rubbed through from a misaligned brake block ( on a single descent with a rider who didn't think to stop!) Piece of electricians tape on the inside to cover the stiching. That tyre was used for another 5ys of cycling/ touring until the tread wore out. However, I imagine not a lasting option on the tread....but perhaps might get you far enough. And Mick's tyre looks beyond sewing.

I fitted the Micronew Brifters, also the mini V brakes and, of course, new bar tape yesterday. A 2-mile ride up and down some inclines, and the shifting is superb (3x7), for £27 (for the brifters) an absolute bargain! Useful to know! But - er - did you try the brakes at all? Thanks. If the wheel removal thing bothers you, Shimano's SM-CB90 quick-release inline brake adjusters help a lot - I have them on my tourer with its Tiagra levers and canti brakes.
