William Lobb was the seed parent. Several pollens were used: several of my roses and 2 english roses. So far all of the roses that bloomed have been mossed, except for one. But this is the only plant to have this crazy amount of mossing on the branches. The others varied in degree of mossing from little to a good amount, much like the seed parent. Duane

Mousseux du Japon has very mossed canes…so it’s a possibility.

Amazing. Japonica is the only moss in commerce that I can think of that is mossed as thickly as this one, so I’d say it’s fairly uncommon considering how many ‘mosses’ are barely mossed at all. Do you know the parentage of your moss?

Is it unusual to have this much mossing? This new branch has a foot of mossing on the end. This branch does not have a bloom, it will bloom next year. Duane

I wish I could tell ya, James! As soon as it was fully open I clipped it, stripped the petals, and set it aside to drop pollen. The flecks sure didn’t show on the first bloom in July, but were undeniably there when cooler temperature prevailed. I can hope it is a stable characteristic, and I’ll keep the seedling over to see next year. I hope it gathers itself together and grows with vigour; c’mon ELINA-genetics!!

Does it hold the specking the whole cycle of the flower. Very jealous of that effect

Okay, holy crap I cannot believe my eyes!!! Second bloom from my ONE-AND-ONLY SEEDLING of (Morden Fireglow x Elina) shows not only deeper colour, but specks and flecks!?!? KEEPER FO SHO!! #Gobsmacked

(Morden Fireglow x Elina) second-bloom, and closer to what I had hoped for in colour!! Quite pleased, but wish the plant had more vigour. Maybe it’s gonna kick into gear in year Two? (Crosses fingers)

I was not far from you on one of the Gulf Islands but I can’t remember which one anymore. Salt Spring maybe. We visited Vancouver Island last summer too. Took the kids to Butchart Gardens. Beautiful.

Wow that’s some thick mossing. Even the leaves appear to be mossed. Reminds me of Japonica. Do you know the parentage of that moss of yours?

I’m breeding for single flowers myself as one of my main objectives. I fell in love with roses seeing a giant wild rose bush in bloom one summer in British Columbia. I also love OGRs but with my limited space it’s a tricky balance keep the right breeding stock between species and OGRs plus the right moderns for adding good disease resistance. Here in NYC we had one of the coldest winters with perhaps the longest stretch of snow staying on the ground I’ve seen in 25 years. Some roses were buried under snow for weeks. That was followed by +100F for a week followed by what feels like a monsoon every other week. So yes, climate change is here and in full force.
