Bridge to be crossed upon arrival. There is a Roland SC88 Pro and an Ensoniq EPS 16 in development. I own the hardware . If Roland officially has something to say about it I won’t use the rom. I won’t try to police anyone else. Ensoniq isn’t an entity and I believe creative Labs may own some of their intellectual property. I’ll take that one under advisement. I would like to see the active legacy companies develop a business model for selling their roms or allowing subscription to them.

It's a spectrogram, not a 1D analyser - nobody's reading exact dB levels from the brightness values, and if you're testing this thing with sine sweeps then you're using the wrong tool. The overall brightness still gives you the wrong idea of what is going on. If you sweep a sine in frequency, you should see a line of constant brightness. What the tilt does is keep the brightness and level of visual detail more even for typical inputs, and that's true even if they're looking at things like speech or monophonic instruments, where a linear scale makes the harmonic spacing clearer. Sorry for being so dickish about it, but since there's no option here which preserves levels for both isolated peaks and noise, I'm not sure your answer is inherently more correct. Fair enough. I would still be inclined to agree to disagree, because I think we should ideally visualize the energy that falls onto a pixel, whether it's linear or log scale. Right now the log-scale plot gives the visual impression that the high frequencies are stronger (blueish noise) which is misleading even if we assume that pink noise well approximates the spectral roll-off required for the brain to perceive a broadband spectrum as roughly flat.

A few of you have asked why avoid the registers at all, and I think the honest answer is that you shouldn't, but they only cover the thread you set them on. Well, setting them for the thread one can control completely is even easier. FPU state is preserved on context switch, so it's set and forget on thread creation. The truncation that happens on floats inside the processor is also important to be aware of. AFAIK, truncation-towards-zero is the default. IIRC, the ALU for integer ops can have truncation behavior modifed. Truncation towards zero is c/c++ cast default, which is why CPU designers have added conversion in this mode that bypasses rounding mode. To access the default rounding to nearest instruction, std::rint should be used. Many elementary functions and approximations rely on integer rounding being the way it is. If one needs something other that standard cast or rint, corresponding c++ function must be used instead of messing with hardware registers.

Anyway, getting back on topic, this library is obviously good for general orchestral music but I think people are sleeping on it for disco, acid jazz, jazz fusion, funk and that kind of thing. For disco strings you would have been looking at a specialised library such as the one in Soundpaint but IX is so agile I think it would be perfect. With the close mics it already has that 'studio sound'. It's currently missing a bass clarinet and bass trombone, but apparently the regular clarinet and trombone can play in those registers in IX.

Anyone can give up. How many can persevere? Sounds noble but it is also possible to waste one's time. I actually have had some successes, eg national live broadcast of a work for woodwind ensemble on Radio Bartok, , international tours of sound design for major artist videos, etc But online posting has been a failure for me. That's the truth. I will live through it but is silly to keep doing it
