Some epubs were delivered to my kindle in their original layout

When i send to my kindle some epubs with the "Send to Kindle" feature, i received an email with this message: We weren’t able to make the layout adjustable for this document because its formatting is incompatible with Kindle’s reflowable layout, so we delivered it with its original layout preserved (similar to PDF). You won’t be able to change the text size or how the text flows on the page. Basically Amazon treats the epub like a pdf. I tried to convert epub to epub, same. What do you suggest i do?

Suggestion for Improving the "Insert Special Character" Feature

I posted a suggestion regarding the Insert Special Character feature in the New Features... thread, and I actually tried implementing Calibre's Insert Special Character tool into Sigil. I built this prototype with the help of AI, and since it's just the initial version, the search function hasn't been implemented yet. I created this sample mainly to explain to KevinH what kind of feature I was envisioning. Here is what Sigil's current Special Character dialog looks like: In my line of work, I rarely have a use for the characters currently provided there. Instead, I frequently use circled numbers, various diamond bullets, and mathematical symbols. Because the books I produce are so diverse, I also use characters from multiple languages, such as Greek and Russian, for parallel notation. Calibre's EPUB editor makes it very easy to find these specific types of characters, which is why I tried applying this feature to Sigil. In Calibre's Special Character tool, you can view special characters by category, and if you type "circle" in the search bar, you can easily find circled numbers. This is Calibre's Special Character dialog: And this is what it looks like when applied to Sigil: Since I had little use for Sigil's default Special Characters, I previously registered my frequently used codes and used a custom-built version of Sigil. However, because I use such a wide variety of codes, I still often found myself having to search the internet for Unicode values. That is why I wanted

Aura E2 Aura 2 slow/unable to connect to *nix PCs - file system/permissions issue?

I got a second hand Aura 2 for my kid and we use Calibre to manage our ebooks. However, connecting the Aura 2 to my PC (Artix Linux w/ KDE) is either incredibly slow or it refuses to connect at all causing my system to softlock. What happens is, I connect the Aura 2 (the exact same way I connect my H2O 2 which connects perfectly fine and without issue) to my PC. It almost immediately pops up with USB device connected (there's a slightly slower delay as compared to my H2O). Mounting then takes several minutes to do it's thing - first it shows up in the file browser (Dolphin) but is not mountable - it shows a red icon and if I try to mount it at this point, it will error and lock up Dolphin. If I wait a bit longer, it will eventually become mountable. But navigating the file system is incredibly slow - sometimes taking minutes to open a single folder. Calibre then takes several minutes to connect to the Aura 2, if at all. It more often fails with the following error: Code: calibre, version 9.14.0 ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device Failed to access files in the main memory of your device. You should contact the device manufacturer for support. Common fixes are: try a different USB cable/USB port on your computer. If you device has a "Reset to factory defaults" type of setting somewhere, use it. Underlying error: [Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/run/media/rose/KOBOeReader/driveinfo.calibre'... I also can't shutdown Calibre without disconnecting the Aura 2 first beca

iPhone Duo your thoughts

Just watched the Apple Event. Would the Duo replace my iPad Mini as a dedicated ebook reader? How well would MobileRead and Kindle apps work in the vertical mode? Thoughts, comments, opinions?

Howdy

Hi, I'm Meth, manually clean most of my epubs because most commercial ones I've acquired suck at being ebooks. Currently posses a PB Verse Pro and a jailbroken denim Kindle Basic, and a CZUR Shine Ultra to digitize with. Inspired by epublibre's css, that I've modified extensively, it's a less-is-more approach to just having basic styling and letter the ereader itself impose more stringent customizations. I'm also a published author in some small-time collections, but those are barely worth mentioning.

[Patches] Extra EPUB Metadata

I have created some user-patches for KOReader, after being annoyed by some limitations of KOReader. Each patch is compatible with SimpleUI and configurable in the patch file. Download (and source code) here . 2-lang-quotes.lua User-configurable automatic -tag localization (including nested) based on epub's embedded language tag. Includes configurable fallback-style (default en-US). Matched case-insensitively, more specific keys win (en-GB > en). Examples in the git. 2-epub-extra-metadata.lua Extracts more metadata from epubs, and writes it to a custom file in the sidecar. Currently only extracts (because I only need/want) the following: title-type subtitle , and contributors-type translator and illustrator . Doesn't add to anything else, without any of the next patches. Only extracts from books without sidecar, and because it reads all metadata on opening a folder (otherwise, you'd have to open the book first before it'd extract), the first time it can be SLOW. 2-ui-display-title-with-subtitle.lua Patches native and SimpleUI views to use a display title (Full Title) combining the title with the previously extracted subtitle in the sidecar. Toggles in the patch to enable/disable (everything enabled by default) injection. Option in Status Bar config to add Full Title to the status bar. 2-ui-authors-with-roles.lua Does two things, each togglable in the patch: Comma-separated authors: Authors are separated by a comma, instead of a newline. Only newlines when overflow is required

Hello from someone who builds fixed-layout EPUBs

Hi all. I'm Ben. I read on an iPad Air in Apple Books, and I've spent the past year building fixed-layout EPUB cookbooks, which turns out to be an excellent way to discover every sharp edge in the format. The thing that still surprises me is how differently the two renderers treat the same file. My pages are designed around two-page spreads. Apple Books shows them exactly as laid out; Kindle hardware gives me single pages no matter what rendition:spread declares. I've mostly made peace with that, but I'd like to know whether anyone here has landed on a build that behaves in both, or whether the honest answer is that you pick one and accept the other looks worse. I also learned the hard way that Kindle quietly ignores inset, object-fit and display:flex. That's a memorable afternoon when your file validates clean, passes epubcheck with zero warnings, and still clips a table mid-word. Glad to have found this place. It seems to be the rare forum where people talk about the file rather than the story.

[Help] Tab10CPro won’t boot after TabUltraC Pro cross-flash — rollback block

Hi everyone, I’m trying to recover a Chinese BOOX Tab10CPro after attempting to convert it to the international Tab Ultra C Pro firmware. My situation: Original device: BOOX Tab10CPro (Chinese version) Original/latest Chinese firmware: 4.2.1, Build 11817 Target firmware: Tab Ultra C Pro international firmware EDL/Firehose access still works Stock recovery is accessible The stock fastboot implementation does not support flashing I extracted the images from the Tab Ultra C Pro firmware and wrote the corresponding partitions through EDL. Unfortunately, the device does not boot normally after the conversion. I then tried to restore the latest official Tab10CPro firmware through recovery. Recovery refuses to install it because the timestamp/build date of the Tab Ultra C Pro firmware currently recorded on the device is newer than the latest available Tab10CPro firmware. It is therefore treated as a downgrade. Where is the timestamp/downgrade check stored or performed? Or what partitions are required for a complete Tab10CPro-to-Tab Ultra C Pro conversion?

Kobo Clara Colour Battery Size on Black versus White Case Colour

I’m a long time Kindle reader, ever since I got the original Kindle Paperwhite (1st Gen) as a present. It has been my only eReader for the past ~13 years. But it has recently become unsupported by Amazon. That means I can no longer download books onto it nor sync my progress. I thought I would be able to side load it, but turns out that only works for DRM free books. Amazon have not given a means of side loading the books in my collection. Meaning I can’t load books from Amazon onto it, that are not already present. That’s a slap in the face. So I want to jump ship and switch to Kobo. Especially as they seem less locked in. The device that has caught my attention is the Kobo Clara Colour. The BW model seems superior in some ways, but it feels like a bigger upgrade to get colour. I think I’ll also be using the device in dark mode, where I believe there’s less of a quality impact. However, while looking at the device on https://ereader.kobo.com/en-ie/produ...o-clara-colour I noticed the following ``` Battery Black: 1500 mAh, weeks of battery* White: 1900 mAh, weeks of battery* *A single charge on the eReader lasts up to 42 days, based on 30 minutes of reading per day with the front light at 30% brightness and WiFi and Bluetooth® wireless technology off. ``` That has caught me off guard. The Black coloured case (which is my preference) has a smaller battery capacity than the White. That’s an unusual difference. Checking with AI, it seems the first release in 2024 (model number N

User "Gordy" joined IRC, wondering about a ban

Not sure if anyone still hangs out on the mobileread irc server, but I do! mobilereader36 recently joined and said they had been banned, and didn't know why. I'll paste the logs below. Spoiler : Code: 07:40:31 AM hi, looking for information on a ban if possible please. have only ever made 2 posts and they are 10 years apart but just got notified of a ban for spamming. thanks, 07:44:39 AM what did you post? 07:45:02 AM I can ask in the feedback subforum 07:45:44 AM but it might be an automated ban for old accounts that suddenly fire back up, since often that just happens because someone was trying out credentials from a leak and got lucky, and are about to spam 07:46:22 AM that would make sense. it was a pretty innocent post for help with a bricked kobo 07:47:04 AM what was your username? 07:47:08 AM is/was :) 07:47:12 AM Gordy 07:47:59 AM its been decades since i got a forum ban, i was like omg what have i done! 07:48:04 AM lol 07:48:11 AM I'll drop a line and see
