Replace the thermostat. This eliminates a lot of bullshit and if it doesn't help it's not the end of the world. Don't get a cheap one.

1/ You can leave the pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft but it won't be being used. You will need to remove the torque converter pilot from the old engine and put on the new engine. Use the engine plate from the automatic on the new engine. The engine plate is sandwiched between automatic and engine block and is usually two piece, or has a hole so you can tighten up the torque converter bolts, Manuals are usually one piece and there is no way ro reach the converter bolts. 2/ If just replacing the engine, support the transmission and leave in place. If automatic is fine, leave alone.

Thanks for the replies. There are some drawbacks to the KA swap. Things are not as easy to access as the Z 24. Maybe try the cardboard radiator trick? Done it before, will put the truck in hibernation and head to Fl in another 6 weeks so no winter driving. I like everything to work perfectly but if factory thermostats only work a couple of years done fighting it. I will keep dailying until then.
