In my view, this is a well-reasoned article, and I largely agree with its conclusions. A detailed discussion isn’t necessary here — I simply wanted to share the piece. Enjoy the read, and have a wonderful weekend! Steve asked me a few days ago to write about horns, drivers, and the connection between them. I needed a day. I would rather spend that day in the workshop than at a keyboard. I said yes anyway. A forum can live with an unfinished thought. A brochure cannot. The connection is not a flange and three or four bolts. It is what happens when a driver finally meets a load it can work into — and what happens when it does not. I will not lecture here. There are already enough texts... Read more
Today is my birthday. I took the day off and I was trying to decide what I wanted to do on my own (wife was working) when Mike Lavigne texted me asking how I was. Instead of texting, I asked him if he was available today and he said he was. I hadn't seen Mike in several weeks since he got his new system set up, so I was curious how things were shaking out. I also wanted to just catch up in general. It was a really beautiful day here in the Seattle area, maybe one of the last for a... Read more

In another thread John T described listening while drawing, someone else alluded to having his system play music out onto the patio by the pool. MikeL has often alluded to listening many hours per day, spending a lot of time with his system. So how do you listen? Does your system provide background music for you while you work or recreate in other ways? Myself… I almost never listen to background music, except sometimes while driving. I can go about one week without sitting down for a... Read more

1 January 2026 Preamp shootout Part 1 7 Audiophiles met in the beautiful city of Aachen in Germany.I was told to bring my preamps along and to bring the following tubes with me.I had to bring as many different matched pairs as possible 6AQ8 / ECC85, Ecc82/12au7/5814a and 6922/6dg8/7308 and 5687 and or equivalent.I got plenty of nos tubes that I bought 30-35 years ago from private sellers or on auctions. I am dedicated to CD for various reasons and am working towards my "final" system as a 70th birthday gift to myself. I currently use a Project transport with a Linear Tube Audio power supply. Overall budget is circa 150K. I am looking at these options: - stay with the Project -Jay's at~5K - Total Dac at ~9K - Metronome at ~40K I love my Audio Mirror DAC (~6.5K) and am pretty certain I will get their new statement DAC. Any real world experience or guidance would be greatly apreciated. I... Read more
