The disc hub generally has closer flanges (to give space for the disc and mount), but I don't know specifics. While the wheel is less dished it's also less asymmetric on dish between left and right. I'd be tempted to but an NOS hub off eBay and ask Spa to build from it.

I think you’ll be fine on the train. Train staff rarely have any interest in bike reservations unless they might need to kick you off. The bike travels for free I think anyway and the boat train is quite late in the evening so after commuting restrictions. I’m surprised you got it to work for the ferry though. Good job!

I stress that I will never use the disc mount. Apart from being wedded to 9 speed am perfectly happy with my V rim brakes.

With modern butted spokes and a good wheelbuild, 32 spokes should be sufficient for anything except cycle camping. It's cycle camping, and more, I want the wheel for . I don't travel light.

I've snapped a handful of axles on freewheel hubs so I would never go back to them except maybe for a vintage bike. I had the same problem recently and coincidently was looking for a T610 36 hole because I have another wheel with that hub. I ended up buying a used Deore hub off ebay which seems good except the freehub slips now and again. That's not for a touring bike so it's not critical. There might be a case these days for building with a disc hub despite the fact that it's not ideal if it's never going to be used on a disc bike. The rear wheel on my tourer is a Deore T610 hub and Sputnik rim.

"Please present it to the train staff when requested." Does "it" (document) refer to the phone screen or printed version? (Presumably one is as good as the other). If I have it on my phone (did Harwich - Hook in June) I always have a printed copy as well, just in case my phone has died or what ever.

Freewheel hubs had that length of unsupported axle for decades. It's not ideal, but having the RH locknut really tight against the cone helps. Then the spacers between the two are effectively part of the axle, reinforcing it. I think sone recent Shimano hubs have a bigger aluminium axle and an inboard RH bearing, anyway. With modern butted spokes and a good wheelbuild, 32 spokes should be sufficient for anything except cycle camping.

I got into the habit of buying decent cables a long time ago after becoming fed up with pound shop rubbish. ATM if I want a USB C to USB C I usually buy google brand off ebay. They're pretty good and not that expensive, the last one cost me about £4. Thing is with ebay is that you have to make sure that the brand is google not "for google" or whatever. They seem to last forever. Even when they start fraying the cable still works. If your cable behaves differently in each direction then it might be a fancy USB cable that contains electronics. Most are just plain wires but some contain a chip for fancy charging features.

Still here! Not riding as much these days, but still out and about on a bike. 73 - pushing 74 - now, and it's not as easy as wot it woz. Mrs Mick F has pestered me to get on here again.
