Do you trust your moisture meter?

This should be an interesting conversation. I will preface this conversation with I make all grass orchard (50%) / timothy (10%) / brome (10%) / EF Fescue (30%) which already I know is going to draw a bunch of these meters are calculated for straight alfalfa comments. We make true 47-50# bales at 35-36" long 33"-34" string to string out of a brand new MF1840 - So they are dense. Recently we just had a 3rd cutting of very very leafy grass that was kind of a tough one and we were forced... Do you trust your moisture meter?

John Deere 1360 Bar Damage

One of my best friends has some unusual damage on his bar. The little chunk of steel that is normally between the stone guards on the front of the bar is broken off in one place. The result is a bent cutter has cut through the top of the bar, down to the gear below it. Has anyone seen this before? How did you handle it? I don't like that the left edge of the cut seems to be grazing the top of the gear. Obviously, I can't weld it shut, so I'm thinking of welding a chunk of sheet metal on top... New Holland 634 round baler fail.

Hello, I just bought this used NH634 round baler and after 5 bales the steel roller moved out of position while baling. I’ve only ever used a small square baler and I’m new to making hay. It looks like the left side was pushed up, at first I thought the right side dropped down, but I’m not even sure what the correct position is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone seen this happen before? What usually causes the roller to move out of position like this, and is this typically... New Holland 634 round baler fail.

Vermeer 605S

I see Vermeer has moved to the next baler now and has a stuffer on it vs the feeder drum on the bottom. That should help in my mind. Anyone seen one of them in action ? 605S Premium

Lowering Fibre Levels in Brome Hay

Wondering if anyone has any experience in lowering fibre levels in hybrid brome hay? It is a 8 year old stand. I cut it just after flowering. Fantastic looking hay just when I do a feed test the fibre always pulls the relative feed value down. Yet a smooth brome field that’s likely 45-50 years old will come in with lower fiber. This is flood irrigation that is well fertilized and yields over 3 ton acre on first and only cut. Last year we received 5” of rain not long after cutting it and I... Pequea TT6100

Pequea is a great company to buy equipment from. The other day while greasing I found that I had a broken finger on a coupler where it pivots and that the shafts were rubbing together. The shafts at the other 3 pivots still had paint on them. Called dealer and thought it was something the company rep may have an interest in looking at for future information. Was put on a conference call right then with Pequea service rep and found that the shaft issue should be resolved by moving some... Pequea TT6100

Krone Fortima Net Wrape problem

Hi all I purchased a brand new Fortima v1500MC 3 seasons ago and have had one problem that has been annoying me from day 1. The problem is that if I haven't got some material entering the chamber at the same time that the net wrap starts its cycle then I have a 50/50 chance of the net wrap ending up around the main feed rotor and not around the bale. Not a huge problem I know but as anyone that baled rounds will know the wrapping cycle does not alway when the baler is sucking in hay... Krone Fortima Net Wrape problem

Warm Season Hay: Big Bluestem, SwitchGrass & Indian Grass

I am considering planting Thirty Acres of Switchgrass in SouthWest Ontario on some sandy loam soils. There is some government funding for these native grasses, however there is a 5 year lock in timeframe with the funds so the crop itself really does need to be a success. If anyone has any insights or experience I would be really interested in hearing more. A few initial thoughts and findings 1. Planting Establishment seems like it is slow. Weeds are an issue and spraying is... Warm Season Hay: Big Bluestem, SwitchGrass & Indian Grass

My Experience with John Deere Service Advisor 5.4 (Construction & Agriculture)

I know a lot of people here struggle with dealer costs and limited access to repair tools, so I wanted to share what has worked for me. I’ve been using John Deere Service Advisor 5.4 and it’s made a big difference. The software runs completely offline and gives step-by-step diagnostics, troubleshooting, calibrations, and full manuals. Another big plus is that 5.4 works not only with the older EDL adapters but also with Nexiq USB Link 3 , which makes connecting much easier if...
