Time for an upgrade! I've never made a build thread for my other tanks, but for this one I'm finally getting it all written down. I’ve been wanting a large tank for years now and the timing finally felt right, or at least as good as it was going to get! I’ll be taking down my Red Sea Reefer 170 which has served me well for 6+ years and replacing it with an Innovative Marine EXT200P. The new tank will be a main feature in our living room with plumbing running through the floor to the sump in... Read more

We are in the beginning stages of planning for a new tank for our new home. You may know from my other threads that our 13 year old son, Greyson, has autism and has always enjoyed the sensory input that aquariums bring. You can read more about that HERE and HERE . We currently have our tanks at our shop office due to moving our house and building a new one. We will sell our 125 gallon reef and donate our Cade Reef S2 1500 to our local public school, where I also work and... Read more
Howdy all! Going to squeeze this somewhere. Was in town going to various stores. Right next to the propane store was a pet store. Inside the pet store was this LED biocube for just $50! Scooped it up and it's small enough to go somewhere. Currently testing the lights.
I suppose it’s time for me to start my journal. Starting at the beginning, I set up my first saltwater tank, a 75, in my parents basement in 1997. In 1998, I moved out and bought a new 75 to move into my 3rd floor apartment. I was satisfied with that until I met my wife, and we bought a house in 2001. I purposely picked out the house with the idea that I was going to get a 180 gallon tank and run the filtration into the basement. So the wife and I found a house that would work, but I... Read more
I was talking to a fellow reef keeper (who also happens to be a reptile keeper), and he was lamenting about the lack of a major organization designed to protect our hobby. Especially considering the never-ending threats we face from environmental groups, government regulation, etc. By contrast, the reptile keeping hobby has a strong centralized advocacy group that promotes responsible private ownership and trade in reptiles and amphibians: USARK - United States Association of Reptile... I’ve had uronema in my display tank for 5 years and it’s popped up multiple times over that time frame. But I just moved to a new place, and did a deep clean on everything except my very mature old rocks. I only have 2 zoanthid colonies now, blood shrimp, reef lobster, coral banded, a diamond goby, scopas tang, a fox face and 2 brittle stars. Now that my tank is sparkling clean (except the old rocks), and I have almost no coral, I want to try to treat my entire display system for uronema... Read more
Hello, I have Powder Blue Tang in 40G observation tank for over a month now. He has been recovering after he picked up velvet and has been treated with copper. Unfortunately, during/after the copper treatment his eye popped. I ve treated him with kanaplex+metroplex for a week and then pulled out and into observation (I didn’t want copper to suppress his immune system). My thinking was clean water and food with vitamins should help him recover. He was doing OK in observation, eating and... Read more

As the story goes, we never really quit do we! The tank is really simple, a modified Nuvo 40L, drilled, with a 10 gallon sump. I use a BM Curve 5 to skim. A handful of zeolites for passive contaminant mediation, and that is it. No sock, GFO, GAC, or anything else filtration wise. Simple, a Berlin style approach, using ideas of regenerative gardening, at the heart of my renewed passion for Reef Keeping. After my recent livestream with @telegraham I am no longer using bottled... Read more
Hey all, Been cruising the site for a couple of years now, but finally decided to register and create a tank journal. I've had fish tanks since my early teens and decided to get into saltwater in 2004 when I was stationed in Biloxi, MS...you can probably guess what happens next, but I lost that tank during Hurricane Katrina. I ended up serving 22 years in the Air Force and retired in the summer of 2022. I've had at least one reef tank at every assignment, so I got a lot of practice... Read more
Finally put the corals in tonight. I got this tank earlier in the summer as the future home for my Gramma Dejongi. A dream fish for many years, I'm not quite sure why we never got wild ones in Canada since there is no embargo with Cuba here. Eventually the captive bred ones dropped in price and I was able to get this guy at a very affordable cost. That being said to display this fish properly it's a bit more costly since I wanted him to have his own tank and his own biotope. Tank is a... Read more
