Hi im new on here and was looking for any thought or advice on the old fireplace in my 1906 terrace. There was an old gas back boiler in there which has been removed and capped off the pictures show where i have ripped plaster board and started removing old mortar off. Now i can see inside there seems to be quite a lot of infill and i can see the old gas flu liner in there. There arch above the lintel seems pretty sound apart from a chunk out of one brick. It needs brick work under cutting... Read more

Evening all, I've just spent a few hours browsing these wonderful forums and begun to educate myself on period properties! This was brought about by considering a 17 the century house as a potential purchase. I am still to view the property, but wondering if this should be a non starter given I have a young family, not deep pockets and minimal DIY experience. Still, a detached house with a bit of space round it would definitely suit us, and my natural instinct is always to older... Read more

Ever since having secondary gazing fitted there have been a few windows where the original fastening mechanism would not fit. This was due to it being too thick to let the secondary glazing pass behind. Currently I have the following as shown in the photo ie a bolt/hex key holding the opening light closed. I could possibly use these Brass Tower Bolt Add an extra level of security within your home by fitting this brass tower bolt. It's perfect for adding to the inside of a front or back door, or as an internal door bolt for bathrooms or other areas requiring additional privacy.The sliding bolt is suitable for horizontal or vertical... www.toolstation.com Was just wondering if I am missing an obvious solution. Hi All, Slowly making my way round restoring the wooden sash windows. They have been 'mechanically' restored and draught proofed, now time to decorate. Perhaps a stupid question- on the internals where the pane meets the glass, particularly on the bottom bar, it seems to regularly start coming loose. What is best to replace this with? Is it also a small bead of glazing putty like on the externals? Or should it be a flexible/moisture resistant caulk? Picture for reference. Thanks in... Read more

Hi all We've just moved into a victorian semi in Stockport, North West UK. The house was built in 1890, solid brick walls, high ceilings - we love it! We've come from a new build - brand new - but we both grew up in 1930s houses so know the sort of things we might encounter. Eyes open! So far - only a few minor issues that have been sorted. Looking forward to getting involved in the forum! In the meantime I have a question - the house has a cellar, which the previous owners had tanked... Read more

Looking for advice on how best to install some fans or similar to get the air flowing and change the stale moist air around to keep condensation/ damp from forming in the stairwell of our house Have reinstated a wall in front of the cellar stairs that existed ( it's an old butchers so leads down to what I assume was the meat cellar in the past) It has a couple of telescope vents but I'm not sure how much air they help move without mechanical ventilation.
