I use Debian sid (most updated). With kernel 7.2.8. The normal kernel loads the graphical environment, the RT kernel doesn't. Apparently, it cannot load the driver. I have an Intel Arc video card if it matters. We're gonna need way more info than this: related system log excerpts and the exact GPU model at the very least. Out of curiosity: what do you need an RT kernel for on an interactive system? Do you do for example some live audio/video streaming processing or something like that? I'd be quite interested in learning about some high-level insights Also, I have a mini PC, using it as firewall NG. Side note: an RT kernel on a router makes zero sense: it can only make things worse. If you want to prioritize certain type of traffic, RT is not a right tool to achieve this: configure QoS instead. Switching to the RT kernel makes it unable to load the video driver (Intel "video card" on the CPU, 12th generation), and it does not offer connectivity on the LAN (i.e. internet is only available on WAN, but not on LAN). Again, log excerpts and exact hardware models are needed.

The GParted Live idea might work if I can't get the Debian installer to work. I'll wait to see if I get any more replies from Aki, and until I have the time to reinstall to try it. Thanks to all for the interest.

I have never used VM (virtual machine). I need to install Windows10 so that I can run Epson Perfection 4990 scanner software. Please give me a small crash cparse on VM and the steps to set it up and use Epson scanner software. Then to install Windows as a VM in Virt-manager (QEMU) that is a long explanation for me to do, so i post a step by step link i found online. You will also need to install the VirtIO Windows Guest Tools , but that is explained and linked to the installer ISO in the guide below. AFAIK the configuration file depends on the desktop environment you use. The default DE, Gnome, is something I don't use and don't know much about. But that file should live somewhere in /home/user/.config.

FWIW, even though OP has marked as solved, I'm OCD enough to like partitions sized in nice round figures. This is what I do: Boot the computer up using a USB with GParted Live. Create each partition as required. GParted will ask for sizes in MiB. So, if a want a 1 GB partition I'll enter "1024", a 60GB partition would be "61440". Continue until all partition are created. Because no drive has a size that is perectly divisible by 1024, I end up with either one partition sized with a decimal, or some unused space on the drive. I'll do one of the two, depending on how I feel, and live with it. Then shutdown the computer and reboot using the desired installation media. I prefer "netinst". When you get to Partitioning, select "Manual" and set up each desired component into the already created partitions. I end up with this: Screenshot_20260928_073835.jpg

What happens when you run the next line? sqv just verifies a key. The key should be installed even if it has not been verified. To verify the key, the hash has to be downloaded and compared to the file, and those instructions don't seem to download the hash.

The Siduction repo has both open and proprietary 580 drivers that will build on 7.2 kernels, but you'll have to do your own research on how to add that repo and its key to Sid, since I just yoink their source files to backport them to Trixie and Bookworm for MX AHS sections.
