How to Make Your Next Vacation More Sustainable

Travelling allows us to discover new places, experience different cultures and create unforgettable memories. But it’s also worth thinking about the impact our holidays have on the environment and local communities. The good news is that sustainable travel doesn’t have to mean giving up comfort or adventure. Small choices can make a big difference, and many of them can even make your trip more enjoyable. Here are some simple ways to make your next vacation more sustainable. 1. Stay for Longer Instead of taking several short trips throughout the year, consider staying longer in one destination. Slower travel gives you more time to explore, reduces the environmental impact of frequent journeys and allows you to experience a place more like a local. 2. Choose Existing Homes Over New Tourist Accommodation One way to travel more sustainably is to make better use of homes that already exist. HomeExchange allows members to stay in each other’s homes, making use of existing living spaces rather than creating additional demand for purpose-built tourist accommodation. Staying in residential neighbourhoods also gives travellers a more authentic experience of everyday life. 3. Walk, Cycle or Use Public Transport Once you arrive, consider leaving the car behind. Walking, cycling and using public transport can reduce your carbon footprint while helping you discover places you might otherwise miss. 4. Shop and Eat Locally Supporting local businesses helps communities benefit from tourism. V

Frustration at no response from management to sort verification

Horrible experience. Last year’s verification ended up in saga of more than 10 days during which my points were taken away from me and I had sent 8 emails to which I had no answers. I was traveling soon and I needed to access my points. Nope, no answer, no respect, no apologies. appalling and now they are asking for verification AGAIN now. I wonder what kind of harassing behaviour I will face again this year.

Put 4-5 photos viewer instead of only 1 photo while viewing the photos of houses

+1 for this suggestion. I have just joined HomeExchange and this is one of the things I immediately found difficult when browsing homes. I would particularly like an option to “View all photos” rather than replacing the existing single-photo viewer. For example, clicking the photo count could open a gallery showing thumbnails of all the photos. Selecting any photo could then open the existing full-size viewer. This would make it much quicker to understand a home before looking through individual photos, especially for listings with many images or where the first few photos show the surrounding area rather than the home. As an additional improvement, it would be useful if hosts could organise photos into simple sections such as Living area, Kitchen, Bedroom 1, Bedroom 2, Garden and Local area . Guests could then quickly find the parts of a home they are most interested in. I recently viewed a listing with 70+ photos, so both features would make larger listings much easier to browse without limiting how many useful photos a host can include.

But within the HomeExchange community, members have their own vocabulary, and the words we use in our first message or in our listing can make all the difference when it comes to convincing another member to host us. A message that “sounds like HomeExchange” shows your exchange partner that you understand the spirit of the community (and that can make a difference when they’re deciding whether to say yes!).
