Thank you. I was gonna have to post some Pepsi memes soon
There could be a link there. Thinking back to the 80s skate scene, hardcore punk was big (Black Flag, Agnostic Front, Minor Threat) but there were also some crossover bands who were popular like Suicidal Tendencies that started out hardcore and crossed over into thrash that featured some shreddy leads (courtesy of Rocky George in Suicidal’s case).
chances are, if you have solid speed (180bpm+) on shred patterns, but only hit around 100-125bm for cross picking you have a dominant escape preference. As an example, if you have an exaggerated downward slant and are mainly USX, doing anything with 1NPS is going to feel odd. The best of of the best double escape players generally max out around 170bpm - 180bpm so you’re probably doing better than you think.
Grrrr. StringHopQuiz 1920×1080 202 KB
Wow, there’s even a CtC-esque pick hand shot in there at 1:22. Super brief, but clearly some folks were paying attention.
eric_divers: Snapping a towel, throwing a frisbee, wringing water off your hands Agreed with these sensations, and I bring it up only because none of these things are solely wrist motions - they all involve momentum generated by forearm rotation. RDT sorta needs that forearm involvement to work at its full potential, even if it’s minor, or nearly invisible. Similarly, motions closer to deviation can work fast… when they get an elbow boost.
mwm: What has worked for getting you through the string hopping madness? The rest stroke is your friend.
I HAVE always wondered if there was a “woodshed” => “shed” => “shred” pipeline, linguistically. There are some skateboarding/surfing connotations too, so Dick Dale is a possible crossover point as well… but skate culture is probably more punk than it is metal, and those guys are pretty anti-shred.
For what it’s worth, I started this thread because I saw the value in these quizzes and noticed nobody was talking about them in the forums yet. Having now completed all four quizzes, I hope all subscribers will integrate these quizzes into their learning process after watching the primer and spending some time with some of the interviews. My average score turned out to be pretty good at 86.5%. I’ll want to brush up on motion mechanics and string hopping. It’s good to know that I could improve my knowledge and comprehension in those areas. They correlate directly to things I’m trying to smooth out in my own actual playing technique. Thanks again.
I’ve tried building up many different techniques over the years and always hit that same ceiling right around 100-125 bpm 16th notes where my picking goes from smooth, tension free, relaxed, to a hopping mess. I can do Gilbert sixes no problem up beyond 125 bpm, and can rip scalar lines in a similar manner. As soon as I require inside picking it falls apart. Alternate picking arpeggios falls apart. I know I need to make time to go through a proper technique critique. What has worked for getting you through the string hopping madness? Thank you and I hope you have a great day. 3 posts - 3 participants Read full topic
