Finding log truck loads

For 15 years, I’ve been reading people on this forum post things like, “just order a truckload of logs,” as I’ve been harvesting all my own. Well, this year I’ve gotten behind on my constant 3-4 years for the first time, with no free time to catch up, so I figured I’d just order a truckload of logs to start refilling my quickly-emptying racks. So far, I’ve called 5 land clearing companies, and only one even bothered to return my call with a “I have no wood to sell”. The other four never... Read more

question chain cleaning

As you can interpret correctly from the title, my chainsaw maintenance skills are still in development. I finally got some time for saw maintenance - after I had a friend use my saw. (Lesson learned about that...) I sharpened my chain. (Somehow that I can do quite well, based on the chips it throws after I sharpen.) I found a lot of fines and some chips had clogged the oil hole in the bar. As a result the bar had gotten hot (bluish edge in places). When I took the chain came off to... Read more

Jotul 602 break down

I’ve picked up this old rusty 602. Quick bit of rust removal with drill and brass wheel just to get a start. I’d like to take this apart and reseal the joints. Haven’t stuck my head in yet but does the top have bolts holding it on? One video I saw made it look like the top was just knocked off with a few blows.

Falling further behind

It' really sad to see the US falling further behind in EV development. On a global basis, it's reported that one in 4 new cars are now EVs. The NYT posed the question “The American EV Has Been Crushed. Will it Take Down the US Auto Industry With it?” The industry did a very costly about face in the past year and a half. It's questionable whether it will survive. Detroit produces no sedans, the staple of fleet and rental car sales. Locally, over half of the cars I see on the... Read more

Chimney and pipe estimate - second opinion needed

I need to replace the single-wall stove pipe I inherited connecting my BlazeKing Chinook (6" pipe) to the double-wall chimney pipe that runs from the internal ceiling through the roof. The company I called (who has excellent reviews in the area) told me I needed to replace the single-wall pipe but also the entire chimney, saying it is a fire hazard, and quoted me $10,800 for the materials plus labor. The internal single-wall pipe is 6 feet long, the ceiling to the roof is about 3 feet (the... Read more

It doesn't get any easier

I'm going to be 70 at the end of the month and still in reasonably good shape but I really can feel it this year cutting my 5 cords.I'm 2 cords in and have till the end of November to get this done weather permitting. Taking it a lot slower.

Jotul 8 Rear Flue to Top Flue

Found a nice Jotul 8 (1980-1990 pre-catalytic, draft wheel on front door) and would like to get it to replace by steel Englander air tight. Finished basement is about 1300SF, and will radiate to upper floor (single story rancher). The stove is currently a rear flue, but from what I have seen, has the possibility to swap to a top flue (which I need due to bend counts and offset distances). I found a free 5 page "manual" but it doesnt have any of this information or pictorials. The first... Read more
