Hi there! As I am slowly closing my old project, there is a new one as soon as I bought replacement for ol' trusty rusty 8570w. With a nice price tag, I though "why not". It has 12th gen i7 HX CPU, A3000 gpu, lovely vapor chamber, 32GB of ram and a lot of potential. There are some things I don't like and some I do. As for now I wanted to : - Change keyboard Done! -Upgrade IPS LCD to OLED 120HZ 2K -Upgrade power supply to at least 280W or even 330W (I use puny 200W) -Make chassis sturdier and coolder? (I mean less hot furnance, more ice freezer) -Upgrade speakers -Upgrade GPU - A3000 to at least A3500 or higher -Newer motherboard? (If I win lottery, haha) I tried using chinesium big HP charger to smaller HP charger (as I have 280W left from 8570w), but failed. So I don't recommend them, laptop don't recognize those. And original 200W is burning itself slowly to death. Already bought cable with enough DP lanes for 4K ! Part number on photo. Now I have to save money for buying that sweet, sweet 120HZ OLED from Samsung.. Case is good, generally speaking, but I hate plastic bottom plate. I plan to try CNC that in aluminium.. maybe. And I have yet to think about modding palmrest to less of that of hot plate :F (no ideas for now) Before I bought that COMPUTOR (think of aliens voice in muppets, haha) I used for 2 weeks MBP 16" with M1. The Problem: Many older legacy systems (such as Ivy Bridge-generation laptops like the HP EliteBook 8570w) are completely blocked from receiving the modern Windows Secure Boot 2023/2024 certificate updates. Because these older devices have strict NVRAM variable storage limits, Microsoft programmatically flags them with an internal Known Issue block ( KI_8 / Temporarily Paused ) in the Event Logs, leaving the system silently unpatched or stuck in infinite update retry loops. Manual attempts often hit a brick wall with authentication or access errors due to payload targeting mismatches. What is special about this recipe: Instead of throwing your hands up or risking a system brick, this recipe bypasses the OS-level blocks by safely splitting the signed payloads and manually appending them to their exact cryptographically matched NVRAM variables ( db vs dbx ), managing the tight variable space perfectly. Broad Adaptability: While this recipe explicitly covers the HP EliteBook 8570w, the same fundamental principles can be adjusted to unblock other legacy hardware facing similar NVRAM or staging limitations. 100% Native PowerShell: Done entirely within standard Windows PowerShell. Zero Bloat: No third-party tools, no sketchy flashing utilities, and no dangerous BIOS modding required. Another one for the collection. Same old story: one day I was mindlessly scrolling through OLX out of boredom and stumbled upon this machine for sale. It was listed as defective and "for parts", not turning on, but the screen, graphics card (NVIDIA Quadro M1000M 2GB), keyboard, and battery (health unknown) had been tested and were working perfectly. Looking at the exterior, the chassis is pretty badly damaged, as you can see in the photos below. Even so, I figured it would be a good deal for the price, whether to restore it or sell off the working parts. I decided to restore and upgrade it, so I'll be posting the progress of this project in this topic. One final note: this laptop is originally a 15 G3 (with an i7-6820HQ), but I'll be turning it into a 15 G4 by swapping out the motherboard. Hello, I have a W870CU where I believe the GTX 460M is starting to die (it needs to be underclocked or else the system will hard crash). I decided to take a gamble on a Dell NVIDIA Quadro 3000M as it was cheap and also Fermi. I installed it into my machine (it was quick and easy, no need to modify/change the heatsink), but when trying to power it back on, the screen is all black with the laptop beeping continuously. Has anybody who has had success with upgrading one of these chime and let me know what GPU’s work and if this laptop has a vBIOS whitelist?
I'm a quiet enthusiast for modular, old, laptops, and I have a soft spot for old HP Elitebooks / ZBooks. I know enough about computers to be fairly confident (read dangerous) mucking about the internals. I have an HP Elitebook 8770w that I'm thinking about sticking a new GPU in, and I'm on the hunt for a Zbook [15/17] G4 spec'd out. I have an old, what would've been top of the line Elitebook 8530w that I refuse to let die. One of the things that bothers me the most is the move away from repairable laptops to thin clients that break if you look at them sideways. It's not a real laptop if you can't beat a man to death with it and have it still boot, or something. Anyway, I hope to find help here in my journey keeping the machines I love so dearly alive.

Hardware Configuration: Laptop: HP EliteBook 8570w (Ivy Bridge platform) MXM GPU: NVIDIA Quadro M1000M (Maxwell GM107) VBIOS Version: 82.07.8D.00.15 (Native HP mobile firmware, Build Date: 2015-10-29, Flashed using the verified HP dump directly from the TPU Database: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/239513/239513 ) Display Panel: Original factory-matching 10-bit HP DreamColor assembly (LG Display) Monitor Hardware ID: MONITOR\LGD0220 Device Manager Name: "Integrated Monitor" Device Manager Description: "Generic PnP Monitor" OS & Driver: Windows 11 running in pure UEFI mode (Legacy CSM disabled). Modified driver package (INF patched for Hardware IDs). The Problem: The machine boots perfectly through POST/BIOS, but during the Windows 11 login handoff, the NVIDIA driver initializes the panel at a static, dim baseline—not completely blacked out, but noticeably dimmer than what is actually set in the active Windows power plan. The hardware and driver are completely stable, but the power/brightness state is totally desynced at startup. Interestingly, if I press the physical Brightness Down key once, the screen instantly snaps out of the dim state, restores its original full brightness level from the power plan, and moves down a single notch. This proves the display link and backlighting are completely healthy,
