Rectal Prolapse in Prospect Steer

I was looking at my neighbor's bull calves when they were being castrated, and the nicest looking one freaked out in the chute and prolapsed his rectum. The vet just poked it back in and said that it was weird. The calf is around 500lbs, has only been on pasture, and was the calmest in the pen; however, he freaked out in the chute, fell down, and pushed out part of his rectum. I was wondering if I should still consider him as a market steer project or just pick a different steer all... Read more

New Steer! He needs a name!

I’ve just gotten my last ever show steer Well at least my last one with my school, and he needs a name. We follow the stud year letters for names, so calves born in 2026 will have names beginning with X. He was born late January so he’s just about 5 months old, still on his mum but we’ve started halter breaking him. He’ll lead well out of the crush to the fence we tie them on, but he’s a bit stubborn if I try and lead him away from the fence. I’ve been doing a small lap of the yard before... Read more

Hello! I’ve joined this site because I’m really interested to learn about ranching in the USA. I’m from England and I’m the CEO of a farming cooperative with over 1300 members. I think CEO is widely understood but President might be a better choice.

Needing advice for first ever steer? (Newbie here)

This is my first steer that I will be showing with my FFA, and he will be my senior year project. He will be moved into the barn on April 24th, so I have just over two weeks to prepare before picking him up from the breeder. I am looking for general advice, tips on good products, and anything else that might help me get started. I will probably be on here pretty often throughout show season. The terminal show will be in late February or early March. It is still somewhat undecided whether he... Read more

oops baby

so we had our first oops calf! our cow shelly had a calf mid may, and somehow wound up taking to the bull again two weeks after birth! so she had a calf about three days ago-in 17°, snow and 20 mph wind. we were lucky we found her and mama let us move her into our calving barn, where we gave her lots of hay and a calf blankie. we had to help her dry off and nurse; she was a little lethargic. fortunately i got her to get a good latch and she drank for at least eight minutes. within an hour or...
