would you drown in big ships wake due to air bubbles lowering density?

Or are those air bubbles but instead water vapor??? Doesn't water vapor instantly re-collapse back into water, hence the "bar tender's least favorite trick"? (slapping the top of a beer bottle with small amount of water in, so a vapor pocket/vacuum forms briefly than sucks the water back down fast enough to neatly brake the bottom of the bottle off, for an instant ash tray, and funnel, combo). Anyways, if you step off the stern of a ship throwing up a big wake, like a nuclear aircraft... Read more

Farewell to Gene (messabout)

I regret to inform you all that Gene, known here by his forum handle messabout , passed away peacefully a few weeks ago, on the 19th of September, at the age of 96, because of stage 4 cancer and congestive heart failure. I knew him very well, he was my friend and mentor. We met here at this very forum when I was designing my very first sailboat, during my studies in 2014. He was one of the many people who replied to my many (naive) questions, and later we shared correspondence via... Read more

low cost cargo boat

Someone I know is considering tying 4 40ft shipping containers together into a 100ft "catamaran", adding bows and sterns and sailing them up the west coast to Alaska to bring agricultural products to his area and save on freight. To his credit he wants to hire an NA to do the structure. I said he was looking as a million dollar project (just for the rig) and the Coast Guard would probably have something to say about it. But it got me thinking if one was looking to transport some cargo by... Read more

Minor modification of existing design?

So after multiple posts here, another build (Bolger Junebug) I still need a small power skiff for clamming, fishing and transporting family to various sand bars and beaches under reasonably calm conditions. Other than it being ugly, the 15'6" Bolger work skiff would meet all my requirements. What I want to do to it is modify the plumb sides, stem, and transom by a few degrees, say 5 or 7. I have made a few sketches to scale on paper, this does wonders for its appearance. I think I will... Read more

YAMAHA V8 5330cc Flywheel Failure – Successful FWM Reset After Flywheel Replacement

My Yamaha V8 engine experienced a flywheel failure due to extended usage, which caused the warning light to turn on. When I ran a diagnostic check with my tool, it showed a fault code 87. I immediately replaced the flywheel with a new one, but the fault code was still present. After some research, I found out that a flywheel reset procedure was required. However, I wasn’t sure how to perform the reset. After looking into it further, I found that my diagnostic tool had the necessary... Read more

Electric outboard or pod drive?

We have a Parker 235 with a 5hp outboard, and we would like to move to an electric power system. The outboard sits in the engine well that you can see on the attached photograph. Despite the cost, our reasons for wanting to go electric are as follows: Quieter - We have decent Tohatsu 4-stroke, but it still too noisy to talk over and motoring is not the pleasant experience that make boating worth it. Safety- We have two young boys, and there is only me who can start the engine Space - An... Read more

homemade rudder steering problem

Home made boat. I've got a tiller that turns a quadrant up in the cockpit. The quadrant has dyneema leads to a car mounted on a track on the back bulkhead of the catamaran. From there, rods go to the tiller arms on the rudder shafts. I'm hoping I can make this work.. but as the rudders are turned, the arms on the rudder shafts rotate a bit and bind up on my attaching hardware. Images can explain better. But if I tighten down the rod to tiller hardware (forget what those with the captive... Read more

Picnic Cat, & proof of concept Aftmast Catamaran Design

Picnic Cat, & proof of concept Aftmast Catamaran Design With this subject thread I am proposing a relatively inexpensive vessel that will act a a proof of concept for my aftmast rig idea, AND end up being a very nice picnic cat in the end. I chose the 'picnic cat' basis for 2reasons. The Thailand one I referenced long ago was built of plywood, and its shapes were very efficient at producing a nice looking vessel with relatively flat panels of plywood... Read more
