My husband had vascular dementia and has been informed by the DVLA that he is no longer a licence holder and he has to stop driving. I realise his insurance is now invalid so I have the following questions; 1. Do I have to take my own insurance policy out as I have only been an additional driver on his policy in the past? 2. Does this mean I have to transfer ownership of the car to myself or is that not necessary. I have a current licence

I have just found out that my partner was prescribed Zopiclone while in hospital for agitation at night. This was meant to be reviewed by his GP, but he has been discharged to a care home. I’m concerned about how this will be monitored in a person who has dementia. I understand that it can cause dependence and is only advised for 14 days. How can I be sure it’s not being used to control behaviour in the care home? Does anyone have any experience of this? I would really appreciate... Read more
My uncle had a CHC checklist done on 30/4 which failed with one A domain and 1 B domain. On the day of the original checklist he’d fallen twice after being in hospital with a UTI requiring a catheter. After a week I finally managed to get him 1:1 on a 72hr recurring basis. Yesterday I was called by his social worker to say that the care home was putting in for a new checklist and she wanted me to request a copy before it was sent to add amendments. She also asked if I had permission to... Read more
Has anyone looking after their partner queried their own memory ? In the last few weeks, there have been times when I've been unable to immediately recall a place, or the name of a product. This has coincided with a change in my husband's dementia. I am repeating the words so they get stored, which I read is helpful, and it does work. But it has scared me. Should I worry,or accept stress can put a strain on us carers?
Hi, I'm caring for my 91 year old Mother who has mixed dementia. She has never had a big appetite but in the past 2-3 weeks she is hardly eating or drinking anything. I'm doing all the things that I have read help, brightly coloured plate/cup, small snacks of finger food etc but she has lost all interest in food and is now also having no more than 2 cups of tea a day if that. If I try to encourage her she either says she has eaten it or that's she doesn't want it and she'll eat tomorrow. I... Read more
Hello I'm just wondering if there is anyone on here who has experience of a loved one being aggressive in a care home. Mum has AZ and vascular dementia is 85 and has been in care for nearly three years. Her disease has magnified her anxiety, paranoia, depression and anger/aggression. She can be tricky to cope with even for us but her sweet caring nature is there, it's just that sometimes you have to work a bit harder to find it. So 7 months into her being in the home she had an aggressive... Read more
Hello all! Hope everyone is bearing up on the heat and not melting too much! I wanted to share my experience of teeth cleaning, following our trips to the emergency dentist over Easter because OH (has EO Alzheimers) had a gum abscess. I realised he doesn’t use his electric toothbrush for anywhere near the time he should, and wasn’t cleaning the backs of his teeth at all. It led to the gum line slightly receding and an infection starting below the gum line…I had no clue until he was... Read more
Hi my dad has dementia and is in a nursing home. The care home used to pay for the incontinence pads but now we are being asked to pay for them as he required too much due to urology medical issues. I’m in Scotland, is this a regular occurrence now that families are required to pay for incontinence pads/pants? He is LA funded. Thanks
Two of my close friends have been diagnosed with dementia, both are older than me but not by much. One has gone from being a walk leader with the Ramblers two years ago to now being bed bound.A similar thing happened to my cousin who died almost two years ago.The other friend has an unspecified dementia which seems in part to have been triggered by a RTA a l couple of years ago. What’s worrying me is that my husband was involved in a motorbike accident five weeks ago,he sufffered serious... My 78 year old sister has Advanced Alzheimers and vascular dementia and has been in a care home since November 2025. She chooses to mostly stay in her room and has recently been found to be wearing very soiled pants or to have hidden soiled clothing and sheets in the room. She is very non-compliant about washing/showering and her personal hygiene has become worryingly neglected. The care home's repeated response is that they cannot force her to wash or dress - which of course we know... Read more
Mum had been in the same CH since 2020, sadly, she passed away in May this year. The care she had been receiving had been going downhill over her last few months and in April she ended up being rushed to hospital with sepsis. An incident occurred with mum that night in April, and this was reported to Safeguarding and CQC by me and the paramedics. The CH was immediately closed to new residents. Mum never returned there. I requested a SAR from the home which has raised many questions about... Read more
Hi, My Mum (80yrs old) has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The nurse (specialist) came out to the care home to give us the diagnosis. She said there are 4 types of drugs given although she didn't have details on one of them but she said its not commonly used (Don't know the name). The 3 are Memantine, Rivastigmine and Donepezil. She said she can't offer any recommendation to which one she takes or if she takes any at all. Its all be left up to me to decide. She said there used... Read more
