Ricochet – an interactive sound and light installation made with Pure Data

Hi everyone, I wanted to share Ricochet, an interactive sound and light installation I made using Pure Data. It’s currently showing at Sonica Festival in Scotland. Eight algorithmic bouncing balls generate notes when they hit the ground, creating shifting rhythms and polyrhythms. In the installation, the patterns also control 24 incandescent bulbs. Visitors can change how the balls move through a tactile interface, shaping the sound and light together. The project started as a small Pd experiment after my father died. I was inspired by the Yamaha Tenori-On. Over time it became an instrument for the Critter & Guitari Organelle, then grew into this installation. I’ve also released a version of the Pure Data patch for others to explore. Video of the installation: Pure Data patch: https://humanpyramids.gumroad.com/l/ricochet-pd Sonica exhibition: https://sonic-a.co.uk/events/ricochet-paul-russell I’d love to hear what fellow Pd users think! Apologies in advance for how messy the patch is - lots of hangovers from previous versions that are hanging around waiting to be used. Thank you for https://reallyusefulplugins.tumblr.com/products for the SH101 patch which is the basis of the bass sound! Paul

Issue with [netsend/receive]?

@ddw_music I tested with multiple Pd processes on Windows and got the same behavior, but my point was: if this is a Pd behavior and there's nothing about running as a plugin that forces one to rewrite the networking facilities, then what can the plugdata team do about it? Edit: Maybe we should be lobbying ELSE to replicate iemnet's objects?

How to use shift with arrow keys

Someone on reddit asked how to take different actions when an arrow key is pressed, depending on whether the shift key is up or down. Since I can't post a patch there, I'm posting a sample patch here. shift_test.pd

data types in pure data with pd-lib-builder

Hey, I've been writing small externals in C using pd-lib-builder (as in this tutorial ) for a while, all the time not really understanding what on earth is being done with all this object-oriented business I'm writing. All the stuff that comes to and from the pure data environment is in some sort of wrapper data-type shenanigan, i.e. a float that is passed into an inlet of a pd object might be a (t_atom) with symbol "float" or it might be a (t_float) sometimes ?? And in order to interact with any of this I use a getter method, or just treat it as what it should be and cross my fingers (maybe with some forced typing now and then too). I don't like not understanding my data types, and I don't really know what documentation I can look at beyond that git repo I linked above. anyway I'm just trying to write an object with a construction argument of one (1) float that won't crash Pd when given garbage/nothing on construction. I'm looking for some kind of check for that it is a ) populated and b ) actually a float. //constructor called when a new instance is made void *rms_tilde_new(t_floatarg f) { t_rms_tilde *x = (t_rms_tilde *) pd_new(rms_tilde_class); //creating a signal outlet x->signalout = outlet_new(&x->x_obj, &s_signal); //passing creation arguments to internal variables x->windowsize = 64; if(f >= 1) { x->windowsize = f; } return (void *)x; }

Pd Online Meetup // SEP 2026 @ Discord

WARNING: Moving colors below ⚠️ 🏳️‍🌈 Here it is! Time for our Bimonthly Pd Meetup This meeting's theme is: Patch art! 🎨 🖼️ So use cables, arrays, GUIs, fonts, data structures, pdlua, etc. to paint a picture or anything It doesn't need to have sound, but it could be fun too... random_pattern_array

write random values in an array. In helpfile of [block~] [pd switch-bang] shows an easy way. Or fill the array with [tabwrite] by banging a counter and [random] with [until] which is fed by [array size].
