I’ve been looking into UV sterilizers for larger reef systems, and one thing that seems to get overlooked is that wattage alone doesn’t tell you much. The flow rate and UV dose need to be considered together. For reef tanks, Aqua Ultraviolet recommends sizing around 30,000–45,000 µW/cm² at end of lamp life, with the appropriate flow rate for the specific unit. For example, their 57W unit is rated at 3,200 GPH at 30,000 µW/cm² and 2,133 GPH at 45,000 µW/cm².

And so it begins . . .
I have a 180g reef in the kitchen/dining room. The tank sits on a steel stand and the aquarium/stand are clad in a facade of panels to match those in the kitchen. The top of the tank is currently open to the room. We are refinishing the kitchen cabinets and I am considering adding additional cabinets above the current ones to run up to the ceiling. For the aquarium, my plan is to not add actual cabinets, but to extend the facade up to the ceiling. The area above the tank will remain open to... Read more
Is it essential to use amino acids in the aquarium? If so, which one is recommended? I’ve been looking into Fauna Marin’s Amin—what do you think?

I was wondering how experienced reef keepers handle the transportation of larger or more delicate aquarium equipment when moving it between locations. Items such as glass tanks, lighting systems, pumps, and other equipment can require careful packing and handling. I would be interested to know what methods people here have found useful for preventing damage during transport. For those who have moved a complete reef setup before, what was the most difficult item to transport, and what... Read more
