Apple Picker Suggestions

Hey guys, Looking for suggestions for a pretty sturdy, reliable and no too pricey manual apple picker. Have some trees that are really producing, but need some more volume of fruit to make some cider....thanks in advance!

Turkey Creek Trees store is open for orders

Sorry guys and gals meant to post this last night..... then I got busy with other projects. Now my phone is exploding with store notifications. We are now taking orders for this Summer's crop of trees. Both through the on-line store and the old school email route. I appreciate your business as always! turkeycreektrees.com

Tree orders for 2027?

What your pans / orders for spring 2027. Looking to pick up yates, keener, hewes, a known kerr, a few big dogs and a chestnut or two. Also getting G890 rootstock for a 3rd row of 12 trees at home. Getting some B118 rootstock as well. Gifting them out as gunea pig trees. Prove what works on b118. Place that has rootstock has triumph? honeycrisp x liberty from rutgers PRI. Anybody try that one. Winecrisp looks good too. Got a little room at home.

Heat check…land prices

What are y’all seeing locally? I sold a farm and bought a farm in the last year. The one I sold took about 6 months to sell. Granted I had it listed by owner and for a premium initially. Ended up selling for basically what I had in it when it was all said and done after switching to an agent and paying commission. I only held that land for a year or less and I guess technically still made about 7%. So not horrible. The land I bought I paid a big premium compared to what I’ve seen. But, I had... Read more

Jump-starting succession in a field with brush piles?

So this one is a bit of a stretch but hear me out…want better cover in a 1.5 acre former hayfield…right now it has some decently tall (call it 4’) standing hay with some small trees and briar patches beginning..I want this to be a thicket of sorts, with briars and shrubs and great bedding cover, as it lies on a South facing slope and abuts an acre of food plot to the east and about a half acre 5 row cover screen of mixed conifers, poplar and hawthorn. All that to say, would adding a few... Read more

Emerald Ash Borer and Ground Blinds

I put four ground blinds up a couple weeks ago. An 8” dead ash fell on one about ten days ago. In the last 24 hours, this happened. Every time I leave the house on my sxs I have a chain saw handy. After any kind of wind storm, it is an afternoon job to clear the trails. Getting kind of scary to be in the woods. I have about sixty or seventy acres that is 80% ash and scattered ash through the rest of the property. Box elder is the main tree replacing the ash

Today we closed on Maple Hill Farm! Habitat Projects

It took a few years in life, but today we closed on a piece of property. Welcome to Maple Hill Farm! Pretty exciting to finally own a piece of dirt that has hunting potential. One of my bucket list items was to eventually own a piece of property that I can step out the back door and hunt. There has never been a lot of things on my bucket list, but this was one of them! Next year good Lord willing another one will get checked off the list as we hope to start building our new house on this... Read more

Tree tubes and *&%&^$%* bucks

I am not sure why I ever bother with tree tubes. I guess because I am too poor to afford cages around everything and the less "valuable" trees just have to hope that some SOB'n buck doesn't want to turn them into a rub. The tree tube was 20 yards from the tree, it is one of the Sycamores I planted for a turkey roost tree. It will probably sucker back from the base and it can start growing all over again.

35 Whelen - Few Questions

My IQ about calibers, ballistics, reloading, wildcats is pretty low. I've been very curious about the 35 Whelen lately as it's a very popular caliber in the Northeast tracking community. Always looking for an excuse to buy a new Remington 760 or 7600. But I really know nothing about this caliber. I understand that it's a necked up .30-06. Got two questions though....1) does it kick harder than a .30-06? I'm a thin 6'2" and have been shooting the .30-06 since I was a scrawny 18 year old... Read more

Kansas State Trappers Convention this weekend

The KS trappers convention is this Friday and Saturday in Sedan, KS if anyone is close by and needs something to do! I will probably be there for a few hours Friday morning through sometime in the afternoon. Not a lot I am needing for this season, but I always enjoy the smells and sounds of no place else quite like one on planet earth. I have heard the link takes a minute to load, but has the schedule for the convention. https://www.kansasfurharvestersassociation.com/blank-3

J-birds place

OK - I have never done a "land tour" sort of thread, but I thought since we are all starting from scratch again I may give it a try. I'm going to start with some big picture stuff and then get into my journey thus far and then move into more recent updates and the like. I hope it's fairly picture heavy as that seems to get folks going. This is going to be a work in progress, but I gotta get started sooner or later. When I got married my wife was left 1/2 (we later bought out her brother... Read more

Opening Day Blitz

Got on em Opening Evening on Saturday. 3 bucks. My son on the far left was one he'd found, scouted, and made the move on. He worked hard to pass his hunter safety course. Academics come tough to him. He did it and proved he's got the goods. 5 year olds on the outsides, but the big one was only 4. He probably put on 30" since last year.
