Probably a bit rich for here, but someone might be interested. Legislator Calls For State to Sell Alaska Railroad ... The purchaser would have to promise to operate the railroad for at least 50 years, the Alaska Beacon reports. The railroad was built by the federal government in the early 20th century and then transferred to the state in the 1980s. Some in the state have said the railroad could be more efficiently operated by a private operator. The railroad itself, however, has been opposed to efforts to sell it. —Railfan & Railroad Staff
I spotted this in Blackrock at the weekend - certainly took me back to my childhood when these were everywhere: Have An Post van models been made in 1:76 or 1:72 scale?
071's at Fifty Iarnrod Eireann Locomotive No. 082 has been repainted into a retro livery to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 071 class which were delivered in 1976 and entered service in 1977. Joining sister locomotives 071 and 073 which also carry heritage retro liveries since 2016 and 2017 respectively, 082 has been painted into the 1995 IE Largo Logo logo livery. The loco was revealed in a small ceremony at Inchicore Paint Shop on Monday 28th September. All the photos can be viewed at https://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Officialevents/2026/071s-at-Fifty Iarnrod Eireann will also be featuring it on their instagram and tiktok profiles.
Anyone miss Dayglo? Well IE have painted 082 in IE livery ScreenRecording_09-30-2026 14-11-44_1.mov
Here's my recently-completed OO gauge model, constructed using the CMAC 3d printed bodyshells, floor/underframe and trailer bogies. She's powered with Lima HO Class 33 motor and pickup bogies in the power car, the frames being a good visual and wheelbase match (the OO Lima 33's are longer) for the CMAC-supplied parts. Decals are from Railtec, the sheet provides numbers for four sets; I'm awaiting custom embossed nameplates from the same supplier. Cars are coupled with Porterhouse Models 3d printed 23mm pivoted magnetic couplings, fitted into NEM pockets glued under the car ends. This is my first time with any kind of magnetic coupling and I'm quite impressed with the results and the reasonably close coupling I've got with them, which is fine on the 2nd and 2rd radius curves I normally encounter. Day 1 running issues were sorted by replacing a missing traction tyre on the motor bogie; adding some (adhesive tyre-balancing) weights to inside floors; and fitting Peco top-hat brass bearings to the trailer bogies (I replaced Hornby 12.6mm wheels with HO versions with slightly smaller wheels and shorter axles, the better to fit into the brass bearings without stretching and possibly breaking the 3d printed bogie frames - replacing these with RTR B3 bogies would have been an alternative). Main body colours are Humbrol matt light grey 147 and Vallejo Model Color dark blue 70.930, roof Humbrol 67 matt tank grey, cab fronts Humbrol 24 trainer yellow (all acryllic, all brush-painted) wit
@jhb171achill mentioned this class of loco to me on the Achill tour at the weekend, so I thought I'd post the info I had on them. I hope this is a suitable part of the forum. The EMD GM6 were a shortened version of the 121 class with a rigid 6-wheel chassis and a 6-cylinder version of the standard EMD 567 engine. At the time that CIE ordered the 121s from EMD, they also invited bids for a batch of 6-wheeled diesel shunters which actually emerged as the E421 class. But CIE could have chosen the equivalent EMD GM6 design instead - they are similar in size, power and capability to the E class. They have drive by cardan shaft like the E, but are diesel-electrics rather than diesel hydraulics. So this is a plausible 'what-if' loco for CIE. I have an EMD Export catalogue from that period which gives the technical specifications of the GM6. (not sure why these images have been slightly corrupted - sorry) Thanks to this excellent thread (and unique model railway) over on RMweb, here are some photos of the GM6 locos supplied to Lebanon: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/topic/181696-les-caves-du-roy-beirut-lebanon-in-the-1980s-chemin-de-fer-de-letat-libanais-cel/
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the Electrostar project, it’s that sometimes the word “complex” doesn’t quite do justice to a project. The good news is that we’re now firmly into the final stages of development, and we wanted to give you a proper update on where things stand. So, where are we at? The Electrostar family is anything but straightforward. Different formations, liveries, interiors, equipment, lighting arrangements, underframes and all the other little details have resulted in a huge amount of electronics work and decoration plates being required. Our most experienced staff have now spent multiple months working through these, checking, correcting and refining all those little details that make the difference between a model that looks right and one that merely looks vaguely like an Electrostar after a long day. We’re now on the final details with decoration plates almost complete. Once those are complete, we can get them off to the Electrostar factory and start producing the decorated samples. But there’s a little more to it… As if the decoration wasn’t complicated enough, there’s also the small matter of the electronics. The PCB for the Electrostar is an exceptionally complex piece of development, and ESU are currently working through the final stages of getting this completed. In fact, it’s one of the most complex projects they’ve undertaken. The good news is that a lot of the technology behind it builds upon the work being carried out for our IRM ICR pr
Hi all, I seen this railway van on my travels today, situated outside Kilnaleck in Co. Cavan, wondering if anyone would know what type of van it is? Any help is appreciated.

Hello there! I have recently acquired a Heljan class 52 (D1000 specifically), lovely model, runs well, all lights working etc. However I have one small problem with it, the model’s end skirts and bufferbeams are in a plain black with the correct ones being supplied as an ‘optional extra’ (for reasons unbeknownst to me) very conveniently the instructions omitted any information on how to change these around, so if anyone has any advice, I’m all ears many thanks.
Would anyone know where I can belt a copy of the bell codes used between signalmen on the Irish railways? Did all companies use the same codes or were these standardised at a later date?
