Some whimsy

I was interested to find Horatio Hornblower captaining a ship named the Nonsuch in one of the novels of the 11 book series set in the early 1800s too.

Had an idea - an air tag?

Was thinking a bit more about air tags… I doubt they store enough energy to run GPS hardware… I’ll bet they rely on the relay device (celll phone) to provide location. I hope someone in the group knows more about air tags and will correct my guesses if I’m wrong. Sail on, Rob

Had an idea - an air tag?

Rob You must’ve watched the launching of 23 low orbit satellites from Space X to add to the band width. Bandwidth equals cheaper communications. I was enthralled by the whole video. An amazing accomplishment. Brian

Had an idea - an air tag?

My ( limited) understanding of how air tags work is that they use Bluetooth Low Energy to broadcast location to any device able to relay it. ( millions of devices ) If/when it reaches a device with connectivity the device sends it into the net. Boats on a mooring would need a operating cell phone aboard or within 10-30 meters. With low orbit satellites about to enter the fray, we may not be far from affordable connectivity for things like this. Fingers crossed.

Had an idea - an air tag?

So as I watched the weather last few days a thought crossed my mind a few times, “ I hope I don’t hear from the bay constable that Aloki broke loose .” Speedy action ,if you break loose , is probably important to limit damage if she goes up on the beach. As as I ordered two new air tags to replaced old /damaged ones I thought , why not leave one aboard? In addition , the location of that stolen Bermuda 40 ( later found in Newport RI) by an observant Harbor Master might have been found sooner with an air tag aboard . Anyway - just a thought …

Annapolis Boat Show Get-together

Thanks for posting this here. I do keep track of this feed too. So if you want to avoid email a reply here to let me know you are coming will save you a seat as well. Hope to see you at show. I’ll be there probably everyday showing another Canadian boat: a 1997 Gozzard 44’.

Annapolis Boat Show Get-together

That’s a great idea to couple get together at a boat show. Norwalk boat show was last week.. maybe next year. Have fun at the show.

Annapolis Boat Show Get-together

Great idea Hillary - thanks for your efforts! Wish we were going to the show but starting to get ready for the winter up here after the recent nor’easter..

Annapolis Boat Show Get-together

Hilary Howes, Captain/Owner of Nonsuch 30 Grace , is organizing a CBNA get-together on the Saturday of the Sailboat Show Oct.17th 12:00 on the upper deck of the Annapolis Fleet Reserve Club at 100 Compromise Street, Annapolis, Maryland . From Hilary: If you are coming to the show it’s super easy, no reservations, no pre ordering, just show up and meet the gang. The FRC has a fundraiser where they open extra bars, seafood, and BBQ in tents surrounding their club on the edge of the Sailboat Show at Ego Alley. I’ll claim a couple of tables for us on the upper deck, just look for the Nonsuch Burgee and bring the food and drink you get from the FRC over. (The attached picture will look very different as it will be all tented over.) If you do not have a ticket for this day of the show you can enter the FRC from the street side at no cost. It was great to see so many of you this winter in Deale and with the Sailboat Show as the draw it would be great to see even more of you. Of course we welcome: owners from outside the Chesapeake, previous owners, wanna be owners, and anybody that wants to talk about our boats! Drop me a line at hilary@integrityyachtsales.com if you can make it so I hold enough chairs.

Getting ready for a nor’easter

Aloki survived well on her morning , thanks. No damage . We did see stronger winds than I believe were predicted . I went out each day and witnessed steady 30/40 k with higher gusts. ( highest gust was 74 k recorded at the YC nearby) A number of sloops had their roller furling open up and trash their jibs. We also saw 4 sailboats break loose from their mooring ( due to chafe ) and sail through the fleet taking other boats with them onto the beach. I credit Aloki with having luck not getting hit and our prep work in dropping the sail , adding the storm riding sail and the spectra chafe line to the mooring.
