I start by noting that Don Norwood, in his work on exposure metering, which concentrated initially on the situation of the use of key-fill lighting for shots of a human face, suggests that mathematical analysis of the situation is most easily done if we consider a hemisphere to be a reasonable proxy for the portion of a human face visible to the camera. In what follows, I will go a step farther from reality and assume the use of a hemi-cylinder as a proxy for the part of a human face visible... Read more

Our host, Asher, has (via external communication) asked why I did not respond to his question following my mention that Norwood seemingly "minimized" the impact of the fill light in key-fill lighting. I'm not sure where I made that comment, or where Asher's question is. But here goes. We recall that the initial thrust of Norwood's work was to provide a "more efficient" method of determining, with an exposure meter, the desirable "photographic exposure" for a subject lit with the "key-fill"... Live band playing in a cramped uninteresting portable stage with deep contrast, as the musicians moved in and out of the sun and shadow. My vantage point was sitting on metal bleachers out a ways from the front of the stage. I wasn’t going to bother taking any shots with the entertainers mostly in heavy shadow and overexposed parts of instruments or body parts, as wel as gear and bodies protruding out of each other when I pointed my long lens at them and tried to expose for them under the... Donald W. (Don) Norwood is perhaps best known to us for having developed and advocated a certain type of incident light photographic exposure meter, one which used a hemispherical light collector. But a review of the literature also shows that Norwood was an prominent advocate of the use of incident light exposure metering, vs. the reflected light meters at one time most commonly in use. Norwood's outlook in this matter was based on the notion that in photography we seek to make available... Read more
I don’t go to car shows to capture reality… … I go to create art. An annual VW event happened this Sunday that Anne and I decided attend - not so much because we are interested in cars or VW’s —— but instead to get some updated photographic content to be used in my photo print and photo card collection and offerings at our daughters artists boutique. Some viewers of my images are disappointed because they are excepting to find normal snapshots of their beloved vehicles. That’s not my... Read more
Inspired by Murray Foote's Duotone series ... Converted C2G in the GIMP; then lights=orange, mids=green (edited the mids mask, other masks C2G luminance), darks=teal; then messed with the color opacities; then merged down and adjusted to taste, et voilà . Not trying to compete, just playin' ... HSL hues extracted at constant Saturation and Lightness:

The hemispherical light collector type of incident light exposure meter, developed by Don Norwood, depends on a certain directivity pattern to "scale" light contributions arriving from different angles as suggested by Norwood's concept of the "effectivity" of illumination being dependent on its angle of arrival at the subject. This development was done in a context of the "key-fill" illumination technique (although subsequently it has been considered to be a valuable exposure metering... Read more
Light painting the Lighthouse last night and capturing star trails around the nucleus of Polaris (The North Star) - one hour and forty minute exposure, using Olympus Live Composite. The second shot was the initial exposure to figure out how dark the lighthouse was in the scene. The third image was the first test attempt at lighting the building while walking around it with my small led lamp. I determined it was too evenly lit and needed to keep the light from hitting the ground and exposing... Read more
