Salmo Rhodanensis

After my trip last year to Slovenia chasing Marble Trout, I started doing some more research on other native Salmonid species in Europe. I’m lucky having a large portion of my wife’s family living in the Peloponnese region in Greece, which we visit once a year, so making trips to other countries is not totally out of the question. Well, my closest cousin now lives in France and his partner planned a surprise 40th birthday for him so we decided to head to the Alpes Haute... Read more

NFR cable wire for deck fence

Missed a bunch of salmon season due to redoing some parapet walls over a garage-top deck that were starting to show some water damage. Quotes to have a guy do it were nuts, like new car nuts... So then the race was on before the big wet starts. Had to take down a bunch of rotting fencing and pull back parapet caps and remove dubious wood and replace with more durable stuff. Pics are 12 years old and back then it all looked good, but all that lattice rots over time and it's a pain to re-oil... Read more

Allen Trout Reel

I have an Allen Trout 5/7 reel that is in great condition. Spent most of its life in a pouch under the back seat of my truck as a spur of the moment “oh, that looks fishy, I’ll try it” set up. $40 shipped.

A win after working with WDFW - Mineral Lake

NOT BRAGGING just sharing a win So, today was the completion of 1.5 years worth of work. I worked with WDFW staff (hatchery, biologists, area managers) and worked with local community leaders and business owners, wrote up and followed the state process for submitting change requests and I took water temperature reading for am entire spring-fall, I asked fellow fisher people to write letters of support (email and paper) and they came through (THANK YOU). I was promoting the benifts to... Read more

Mushroom and other wild edible foraging

I know they are some avid mushroom hunters on here so thought this could be a fun and informative thread. I'll kick it of with some "early morels" (verpa bohemica) I got into yesterday. First time I've picked them in years... decades really. While not true morels, they taste similar and are, I think, delicious. The main difference is they lack the substance of a true morel. Verpas are fragile by comparison, and cook down so much it takes a lot to make a "meal". One suggestion I came... Read more

Swordfish

This is one of my favorite fish to eat. Harpooned, Green Swordfish cooked on a bbq is top notch. They use airplanes to spot the fish so that a boat can chase them down and use a long plank for the "harpoon man" to "stick the fish" while the captain steers the boat from the crows nest. The most "macho" fishery on Earth.. IMHO. Driving a harpoon into a 500 pound fish is ...well...bad ass. And this fish is a monster of the deep with it's horrific sword ...the only thing that it fears is the... Read more
