We asked multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Chad Shivers to offer his insights into some rad records, and he was stoked to share. Little Kahuna - One Against the World 7” EP (Colorado Instrumental Fanzine) (Colorado Instrumental Fanzine) I can’t tell you how excited I am to have another vinyl release from Little Kahuna! The band has just been cranking out material since their eponymous debut LP in 2021. Each successive outing is an improvement over the last, with the group honing its songwriting, performing, and recording skills. Their latest 7” record, One Against The World , is certainly no exception. Side A, containing the titular track, is classic Little Kahuna. The music is light and breezy, wistful, serious though not overly so, with hints of playful sunshine pouring through the cracks. A steel guitar, courtesy of Ben Wagner, comes in immediately and really makes the track that could live perfectly at home on The Vanduras’ “In The Dark” or James Calvin Wilsey’s “El Dorado” records. Wagner fills the space and complements lead guitarist Craig Skelly’s minor melody exceptionally. Around the halfway mark, the vibe shifts toward the light, marked by a staccato guitar in a major key with passing notes dancing on the fretboard like delicate raindrops upon a leaf. We asked guitarist Dylan Oldham to share his perspective on some rockin’ recordings, and he was willing to write. The Vara-tones - The Amazing Mr. V CD (Self-Released) The Vara-Tones, a classic '60s California Surf band, is still making records today! This review is of their new 2025 album, The Amazing Mr. V . I read all the band's history I could find, and discovered that they started in 1961 and were active until a break-up in 1966. After Pulp Fiction and the resurgence of surf music, they reformed and released a great 1999 album titled Jetty Subject to High Surf . In 2005, they released another great album called Headin’ Out . The biographies stopped there (or at least the ones I found), but I did get a bit of information from Big Tiki Dude (Jeff). He mentioned that they’re older guys now (of course, they must be!) and don’t play live anymore. I will say this album is pretty impressive for guys who have been around since the first wave! Most of this 2025 album is fast-driving surf rock! As with their other releases, there are no throwaway songs on this album. All of the tracks feature awesomely crafted melodies with emotion and power.
