Tiny Workshop Shed meets Ambitious Upgrade Project

I've posted some of the very beginning stages of this ambitious project on another forum, but I thought you may also be interested in it over here too. I have a Tiny Shed that I've "converted" into a "workshop"... It's not much of a workshop, really, but it's where my little projects take place. At present it's a single layer shiplap "building"... kind of a building, anyway... in reality it was an rear-end-extension of an existing self-built car port. (There are a few pictures in my... How The Spindle Moulder Gained Its Notoriety

So, a Mr. Guineafowl21 send me some cutter blocks for safekeeping that he had acquired, and I thought they were perfect examples of just how the spindle moulder got its fearsome reputation and worth a little write-up. Now, these square blocks aren't strictly spindle moulder blocks as they are clearly off a tenoning machine being of a small size with counterbores, but the points still stand nevertheless. The square cutter block was one of if not the earliest style of... Read more

2 measuring questions .

A couple things i sometimes struggle with in regards to measuring, and best practices. 1. When you want to setup a combi square to a specific line on the rule, how do you do this when you can’t really “see” the line. Like for example in the pic below, its hard to tell if i am seeing the line or the reflection of the line in the stock, then the stock gets in the way. How do you do this accurately? 2. When setting a wheel marking gauge using a square blade, how do you set it when its... Read more

What size screw is this?

I’ve totally buggered the head of one of the two screws I need to attach a salt/pepper grinder mechanism. Sorry to mix measurement units. That’s 15mm by, I think 2.4mm. Next task will be to try and find some.

How to attach cast iron thumbscrew to zinc steel threaded rod for light duty moxon vise?

Making a moxon vise for the travel tool chest, the threaded rod i have is 1/2” thick zinc plated steel. The big 3” wingnuts are cast iron. I do have a welder, but haven’t had luck wellding cast iron, and I would need to remove the zinc coating before welding the steel rod. So trying to come up with alternatives. Not sure if Loctite would be strong enough. Maybe JB Weld? Some other method? Or a combo of an adhesive and like mechanical way (is it called peening when you hammer a punch... Read more

Windows - where to start

We inherited these rare windows when we bought our place. They were installed by that well known craftsman - Dogs. I believe his surname is Dinner. The catches are awful and I'd hoped for a quick replacement. Mission Impossible. It's a job for next summer, I think, when I can take out both casements. Let me introduce you to his workmanship. The front of the casements are proud of the frame by 10mm at the bottom and 4mm at the top on both Naturally... Read more

From across the pond Florida USA

I have spent my last 28 years doing mechanical engineering And building automation for control of air conditioning heating and ventilation systems. ...Over the last 50 years I've dabbled in woodworking or maybe more carpentry work building project specifically we need at the time But now it's getting closer to becoming hobby work and less about work real work. A paid job. About 25 years ago I started collecting some of my own woodworking tools like table saw miter saw Hand tools But prior... Read more

My cyclone set up

With such a lot of talk around Rob’s(Woodbloke) cyclone set up I thought I would share my own system with perhaps more than a nod to Mr H Robinson. My workshop is part of a large barn which gives me the opportunity of having a twin motor camvac above and outside the workshop. Workshop door is to the right. By way of 100mm plastic soil pipe the camvac attaches to a Cyclone Central (sadly now defunct) cyclone which sits atop a 200l plastic barrel; the top of which I cut off and... Read more

Clear Coloured Finish Recommendations

I generally use Mike's Magic Mix for almost everything with the only exceptions being Mineral Oil for food-related stuff (e.g. tea caddies) & Chestnut Hard Wax Oil if I'm in a rush (4 hours between coats). I'm currently making something quite small out of Sycamore & for this project I'd like to keep the light colour rather than enriching it with the Tung Oil in MMM. Mineral Oil would probably work but presumably wouldn't be especially hard wearing. Any recommendations? I'd wondered about... Read more

Commercially available sheds/workshops

Hello all, A few years ago, I was keen do a decent spec self-build of a workshop for woodwork, metal work and motorcycle storage and work. Life got in the way and I didn’t pursue that. Now I’m thinking of just buying a good quality solution and having it delivered and erected. I’m considering a Jon William Stables Elite Range Garage 3.6m x 7.2m on a concrete base with double garage door and a personal door. Maybe with a insulated section door rather than double doors. Looking at the Elite... Read more
