Best phone for paperless surveying

Hi All, I currently have a Galaxy s25 ultra which is great for surveying especially as it comes with a stylus, but the issue is, it's my main phone i.e. I use it for all the normal phone stuff too and need to not break or loose it down a cave, it (was) worth £1000, so an expensive bit of kit for a caving environment. I need to buy another me thing, anyone got any recommendations, preferably comes with a stylus or is compatible with one and will run SexyTopo and connect to a SAP. I also take... Read more

A new UK caving podcast? Looking for views

Hi all, I’ve been thinking about the idea of starting an interview-style UK-based caving podcast (no promises!), where we’d invite guests on to share caving stories, experiences, and opinions on caving-related issues they’re involved with. It would be more of a bit of fun, nothing huge or overly ambitious, just something enjoyable to have a go at. The format would be similar in spirit to "The Caving Podcast" that many of you may already know, but with a UK focus rather than an American... Read more

Cheddar Gorge: critically endangered "Faye's whitebeam" trees

How some of UK's rarest trees are being saved by cliff-climbing pensioners Volunteers are supporting a new scheme to save critically endangered trees. www.bbc.co.uk Surrounded by the feral goats and Soay sheep of Cheddar Gorge are some of the UK's rarest and most critically endangered trees nestled on cliff edges. To reach the 10 Faye's whitebeam trees, volunteers of all ages have to climb up the gorge and Burrington Combe in the Mendip Hills, Somerset, which are the only places nationally the species grow. Taking action to protect Sorbus trees The latest update to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species published in July 2026 has brought renewed attention to some of the UK and Ireland’s rarest native trees: the whitebeams, rowans and service trees of the genus Sorbus. www.forestryengland.uk

Thank you for visiting us at Hidden Earth!

The British Caving Library would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who visited our stand at Hidden Earth! Over 200 caving books found new homes, plus a large number of journals. We raised over £730 in donations which will be used to support the work of the BCL. In recent months the BCL has also collated publications to fulfill 'wish lists' for 18 clubs, and 8 individual collectors. Brilliant to see so many caving publications find new homes!
