n8n surely can handle on demand requests through webhooks. and for notifications you can use schedule trigger.

I’d key the dedupe on the delivery rather than the order. Shopify puts an X-Shopify-Webhook-Id header on every delivery, and their own webhook docs say that’s the one to use for ignoring duplicate deliveries. Which is your case exactly, same event sent again because the 200 came back slow. I read that page today, 2026-09-22. Order id works too, but it also eats a second orders/create for the same order that was actually a different event. You’d be dropping a real one to catch a retry. The scenario I’d worry about is 2026-10-16, when Shopify locks API version 2025-10. If your key is some field in the body and that field changes shape with the version, the key can go null or just look different, your seen check stops matching, and every retry from that morning gets treated as a new order. The header doesn’t move when the version does. Things I haven’t checked: how long the same webhook id keeps showing up across the whole retry window, so I’d keep the seen keys longer than feels necessary. And I haven’t run this on a store doing 1000 orders, so the header part is from the docs, not from my own logs.
