Hello

Hello just joined today. I have a sister with mixed dementia. Reassuring in a way to read of others' experiences of this horrible disease and ways of coping. Best wishes to you all.

Mum's journey is over

Yesterday Mum's journey ended, it was from early Friday morning when the care home called to say come now to Monday afternoon, but extremely quick after the actual death. My thoughts now are I am very grateful for the time I stayed with her especially the night time sleep overs by her side. I will stay on the forum and will be pleased to help anyone if I can xx

Hello,

Hi, I’m new to forums, I find this quite hard as I find it hard to ask for help. My dad is 90 has dementia living at home. In June he was taken into hospital as they though he was having some type of seizures, due to his age and frailty they do not want to put him through the ordeal of brain scan. Anyway he became very ill whilst in hospital, he pulled through that but then stopped eating and drinking after for weeks he was fast tracked for end of life and I agreed to put him in a nursing... Dad with Dementia and other health needs

Hi I am currently caring for my dad who has mixed dementia with the added complication of a Stoma. He cannot manage this himself and needs someone there 24/7 to ensure his dignity and hygiene. He still knows who we all are but his short term memory is gone. Within 30 seconds at times. He wants to stay in his own home and I manage his finances. This is increasingly difficult with Adult Social Care and the amount he is deemed to be able to pay towards help we receive. No one seems to... Read more

Scam calls and dementia

My mother has dementia and on a recent visit she received 4 scam calls over 2 days. Two were pre-recorded, but the other two were intercepted by me and I almost fell for their request. Although she can no longer access her finances and would be little use to scammers, she finds these calls distressing and I worry. BT says that apart from reporting and blocking individual calls there is little they can do against sophisticated, ever evolving scammers. A lady at BT, anecdotally mentioned a... Read more

Those two old chestnuts - guilt and regret

It will be a year tomorrow since we lost mum and the last week, year, 10 years have been tough. Whilst there have been some lighter moments, like mum putting cornflakes on her toast, for the most part it has been heartbreaking and brutal and as well as losing my lovely mum, I feel like I have lost myself and i am now an emotional, anxious wreck. As each day passes, I replay the same day last year over and over in my head. I was with mum 4 days before she passed but I didn't stay and I... Read more

Hi, Im a Newbie! 😊

Hello, I recently joined this forum seeking peer support with caring for my 89 yr old Mom. Personally, I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder with Severe Anxiety, over 5 years ago. I recently weaned myself from taking Prozac and Hydroxyzine for about 2 or more years. I switched to natural remedies. My mom actually has Alzheimer’s Agitation Disease, Dementia that is worsening, hallucinations, paranoia all along with the extreme verbal aggression that comes along with it. And of... Read more

Navigating the pathways whilst pre-grieving

I’m 22 and I’m exhausted. My grandmother (87) has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s for 6 years now, with a steady decline that has really worsened over the last year especially behaviourally. 2 weeks ago she unfortunately fell and broke her hip and the consultant has referred to CHC for a nursing home placement. My Grandad is 92 and really overwhelmed by the whole situation and has been left in the dark throughout the whole time. She is seriously struggling in the hospital ward whilst... Read more

Bedtime

My hubby refuses to take his clothes off at night and won’t even take his shoes off. If I try to get him to take them off he gives me an awful hateful stare. What can I do?

Changing care homes - self funded

Mum has been at a private care home for 3.5yrs now, she had to be able to pay for 2yrs for them to take her. I don't think she has 2yrs left now so I don't know if another home will take her. She's not happy about certain things and after having a rude email from the manager, I'm now looking to move her. When Mum went into this home, they said that the Council will continue to pay for her on the basis that it would be a detriment to her to be moved. The home takes people in with LA funding... Urinary retention

Has anyone any experience of someone they care for getting a catheter? How did it happen for them? My wife Alzheimer’s is pretty severe now. She stopped walking last year over a period of two weeks. Her limbs are very rigid and do not move so well anymore. They can be pretty painful. I'm writing this on a Monday. Slowly the distance between her passing water has increased. On Friday it was particularly long being 12 hours. She often goes in the night sometimes between 7pm (bedtime) to... Read more
