With small tides and very little water movement we were planning a trip way off shore, that did not happen as you will read below. A 5.00am alarm for me and on the boat prepping by 6.0am. Lots of bait thawing and dreams of something large bending the rods. All was going well till Chris had a troubled look on his face and his ears tuned in to the engine note and watching the rev counter, temp and oil gauges. He had noticed 400 revs missing at the top end, maybe something around the prop, a dirty bottom or something unexplained. Then I suggested could it be as simple as the throttle cable adjustment. Up came the engine hatch and a quick check, no not the throttle cable, but what's that noise and the temp has gone up. A quick look over the side and no water pumping around the engine, switch off quickly and let the engine cool down. Right lets deploy the Anchor, we do not want to end up in the channel. Get the rods out, no point wasting the opportunity, who knows the fishing gods may give us a gift to raise the spirits. It was very strange, we had broke down but no panicking just methodical thinking and complete confidence in Chris, with his engine knowledge, his meticulous planning carrying spare parts often needed and all the tools he needed. The club received this email from the SSE. I'm assuming this isn't of concern to any members, but Im passing it on as requested. "Ref: Recreational sea angling taking place around the railway bridge at Rockley - Poole Bay Small Boats Angling Club Good evening, Firstly I apologise for the timing of my email in the evening. I write on behalf of SEPD - we have been given this contact as the contact of the Poole Bay Small Boats Angling Club. Simply put, we have had a number of incidents of recreational fishers casting over the 132,000 volt electric lines supported by the pylons/towers. You will appreciate the enormous risk this creates to those individuals and it also puts, carefully engineered supply conductors, and the wider electrical network at risk due to the risk of a fault. We are not aware of the individuals, but a number of call outs have been required to remove fishing line from the electrical lines. We would ask you to make your members aware of the risks they are putting themselves at if they are undertaking the type of casting in question. There is also the electrical network to consider as these lines supply many properties – we do not want anyone to get seriously injured or killed as a result of a simply oversight on personal safety. From a record marine heatwave to fresh evidence of stocks under strain, the pressures on our waters are mounting. But so is our resolve. This month has been about understanding what's changing beneath the surface and fighting for the fish - and the anglers and skippers - who depend on it. We're thrilled to launch two newly funded research projects, running over the next three years, that put anglers at the heart of the science. Working alongside you, we'll be deepening what we know about some of our most fascinating and vulnerable species - tope, undulate ray, blue shark and porbeagle. Anglers encounter these fish up close, in numbers and places the science often misses, which makes you an irreplaceable part of this work. I was very excited for me and Andy as we left tuckton on Monday morning. it was on Andy’s Orkney out of Banff that we had a great day on Haddock and ling a couple of months back. Tides might be brisk but it was a flat forecast. I wanted to give my all to a Bass project. Colin and Jerry1 gave me the. Lowdown on how and where. It would be some fifteen miles steaming. we stopped to feather several times on the way out. On the east drop off at the southern end of th shingles I tussled a handsome bream to the boat only to lose it. NOTE TO SELF: Throw away the rusty feathers! They are catching any amount of mackerel in the moray firth, Andy has a freezer full…..in Scotland. wed bought some tiny frozen joey fillets so that and Squid baits were used on our markswhere Colin has reported great success before. we fished and moved many times on the Ebb One fish only became apparent as I wound in at the end of a drift. The wind got up, the sea got up and I started to question whether I dare go on burning fuel for the drifts, with the sea getting ever more lumpy we soon lost our nerve. The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “ Add fish-eating birds to Schedule 2.1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 ”. Government responded: The government recently consulted on amending Schedule 2.1 and invited views from stakeholders. Responses are now being considered. Final decisions will be taken by Ministers and published shortly. The government consulted on proposed changes to Part 1, Schedule 2 (2.1) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 earlier this year. Although all wild birds are protected under the Act, Schedule 2.1 provides limited exemptions that allow those species listed on it to be shot outside their close season, mainly for recreational shooting and harvesting. Schedule 2.1 currently lists 19 species of wild birds in England and Wales and 23 species in Scotland, mainly ducks, geese and wading birds. The consultation closed in May. Defra and Natural England previously carried out a review of Schedule 2.1 in England to ensure that shooting certain species of wild birds is sustainable and does not undermine their recovery. Similar reviews were carried out by NatureScot on behalf of the Scottish Government and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) on behalf of the Welsh Government. Following the conclusions of the reviews, Ministers largely agreed with various evidence-based recommendations set out in them, for example to extend the close season for woodcock, and remove pochard from Schedule 2.1. A couple of weeks back i had an issue starting the boat. I thought it was sorted after i found a loose connector. Next timeout same problem Lots of research and things tried. With no luck Time for a Volvo engineer and Vodia software. Diagnosed a dead Powertrain Control Unit. Eek. We took mine to another boat at work and get the same fault code. Had to order a replacement. ££££ When looking into the fault we found a loose pump on a cracked bracket. The part arrived yesterday. bugger wrong one, correct one came overnight from Belgium On a scorching hot day, that was all put back together and painted up today. Boats now back on her mooring, as the replacment PCU is on back order until August. Now catching up with a few jobs at home, and getting the BBQ out. Not a great time to have a dead engine. Took a couple of friends out for a days fishing today. Phil is a keen freshwater angler but has done a little bit of sea fishing before. Darren is not an angler but was keen to give it a try. Lazy start out through the 9:30 bridge lift from Holes Bay out into a fresh breezy bay. The tides were large today so decided to stay inshore. Our first stop was at Poole patch. Lots of small bream and mini conger up to 8lb. SIFCA fisheries boat came alongside for a chat helmed by an ex club member Dave Mayne. After a quick chat they went off to their next victim 😄 The guests were looking a little green but adamant they wanted to stay out. A move was called for so down to Southbourne Rough for more of the same ie bream and slimeys. by now Darren was looking not to good so I decided a return to the harbour was called for where we had more mini bream plus loads of weed. Gave up and came back in thought the 15:30 lift. Whilst the old Poole bridge was midway through lifting some idiot thought it would be a good idea to jump the barrier and make his way up the Poole side leaf with a view to jumping to the other leaf. The bridge operator was not a happy bunny giving the offender short shrift though the tanoy. The guy bottled out of jumping and made his way back to civilisation. Well that made the day more interesting lol. Back on the berth the boat was given a quick wash down then into the bar for a beer. Both guests said they enjoyed the day and were up for another go at a later date

I've just had a chat with a new/returning member from Fordingbridge. Nigel and his son Harry. Theyre off fishing on Silver Spray tomorrow but they do have their own boat as well. Join in Nigel, don't be shy and we look forward to plenty of pictures, reports, questions and input. Graham

Hi All I have a Tohatsu 6hp auxiliary, only been out 3 times and on each trip it manages to bounce itself either releasing the mount and dropping down or releasing itself from its up position and becoming in its vertical position. Every time this has happened it’s a battle to try to get it back to position overhanging the boat. Are these engines actually worth carrying onboard ? Are they even practical to use as I’m not sure how I’d even steer it in a practical sense . In the event of a breakdown is it better to just anchor and enrol to a breakdown service like Seastart ? Thoughts please ?
