Should AI Guardrails Be Built on the Golden Rule?

I'm going to argue for reciprocity as a foundation for AI guardrails, then spend most of the post explaining why it can't actually stand alone. That's not a bait-and-switch, it's the argument. The interesting part isn't whether the Golden Rule is a nice idea, it's how much philosophical weight it can bear once you try to build something on it. Why reciprocity beats a rulebook A system built mainly from enumerated prohibitions has no obvious principled way to extend those prohibitions into genuinely novel territory. It only covers what someone anticipated. A reciprocity-based principle is generative instead of enumerative: it gives the system a way to reason about cases nobody foresaw, because "would I accept this being done to me" travels across contexts in a way "don't say word X" doesn't. Anthropic rewrote Claude's constitution in January 2026 specifically to move away from a pure list-of-rules approach, on the grounds that a list can tell a model what to do in situations someone anticipated but can't teach it why, and understanding why is what lets a model generalize into situations no specific rule anticipated. That's evidence that generative principles beat prohibition lists in general. It's not evidence that the specific winning principle is the Golden Rule. The document reads less like "apply reciprocity" and more like "act as a skillful, honest agent would under this priority order." Reciprocity is one ingredient, not the generator. How it's actually being implemented

Aussie Athlete Poops Her Pants

Organisers of sporting event HYROX have faced criticism after an Australian woman was allowed to continue competing after she suffered faecal incontinence. The incident in Beijing has been the subject of debate on Chinese social media about HYROX's health and safety standards, as well as athlete responsibility. HYROX China has said the area was decontaminated(!) after the race finished. Joanna Wietrzyk has been receiving heavy criticism online as commenters argue she posed health risks to other competitors by not being withdrawn or removing herself from the competition. This is one of the only uncensored videos I could find of this disgusting performance—watch it at your own gastric peril... https://www.youtube.com/shorts/r9OsNkxUCvo And this is this delightful woman part way through the event, covered completely in her own faeces. I can understand why she won the event—the brown slime and stench, understandably, put all the other competitors off their game! Should there be an official appeal, and her win be rescinded?

Homosexuality... Nature or Nurture?

New 2022 research confirms that a mix of prenatal factors and genetic differences could explain human sexual orientation. Homosexuality has been a constant throughout human evolution and civilisation, and yet, science has been slow to look at the causes of sexual preferences. I Was Born This Way — NLM, Science & Society, 16 May 2022. This report is possibly one of the clearest I've seen regarding this age-old question about nature or nurture resulting in homosexuality. So... foetal blood sampling can currently be performed to diagnose genetic or chromosome abnormalities in utero. Could then it be used for determining incipient homosexuality, or are the risks to the foetus too great for this sort of (unwarranted) procedure?

Twenty Five Years On - 9/11 Remembrances

My thoughts of this day twenty five years ago when 2,977 Americans lost their lives, and my condolences to all those affected by this tragic, reprehensible attack. May it never be repeated . A drone display depicting the Twin Towers using 2,977 lights, one for each life lost on 9/11
