What model is it? How many drives and size? How are the configured (raid level)? Did this just happen with no others changes to your network? Did it work before this happened or did you just acquire it?

Since my 4TB drive has just been repaired for bad blocks, I need to unbrick it without losing any of the existing user data . Could you please share the absolute simplest, step-by-step procedure for a Gen 1 unit to restore/flash only the OS and system partitions (kernel/rootfs/config) while keeping the data partition intact? What does the PN # on the bottom of the My Cloud single bay enclosure end with? If it ends with “-00”, then it is a first generation single bay My Cloud. If it ends with “-10”, then it is a second generation single bay My Cloud. The process and files to “unbrick” either an existing single bay My Cloud or new hard drive you want to put in a single bay My Cloud enclosure differs between each version. You can search this site for the “unbrick” process for either the first generation or second generation My Cloud. There are many past discussions on the process and ways to perform it on either an existing single bay My Cloud hard drive or a new hard drive you want to put into the enclosure. For example some have used the following directions mostly with good success. One may need to perform the steps more than once before it works correctly. And one may need to perform a My Cloud reset (40 second pin reset) after successfully booting a unbricked My Cloud the first time to clear the “0” capacity error and fix some other issues that might appear upon first boot. Hi team, I need assistance setting up a cloud drive. Here’s the situation: I have a 4TB NAS drive that went rogue and started showing a red light. I opened the casing and used Victoria BadBlock Finder to repair sectors, but the issue persists. For testing, I prepared a 500GB HDD (converted to EXT4, boot-ready) to check the PCB, but that also failed. My goal is to: Create a guided setup from scratch to make the 500GB HDD boot-ready. Use it to verify whether the PCB is functioning correctly. Apply the same process to the 4TB drive without formatting it, if possible. I’d appreciate guidance on: Whether this can be done without formatting the 4TB drive. If not, how to perform a complete setup from scratch in a step-by-step manner. Having a network issue here. MyCloud NAS drive not recognized on my network. Plug in the network cable, and lights on switch and back of drive flashing as activity, but nothing. Tried plugging directly into router/modem, but get same results. Even swapped out network cables, no change. Suggestions??

I think the bigger thing to consider is that the plastic case can survive a lot more than the actual hard drive inside. There’s no real number of drops these drives can handle because even one bad impact while the drive is spinning can cause problems, while another drive might survive several minor drops without issues. For travel, I’d be more concerned about the USB port, cable getting pulled, and the drive being knocked around while it’s powered on. If the data is important, I’d definitely keep another copy somewhere rather than relying on how tough the enclosure feels.
FlottingFoam: I tried a different USB cable and another PC, but it’s still the same. What should I do now? The next useful check is Disk Management (Win + X → Disk Management) and see whether the drive shows its correct 1 TB capacity and whether the BitLocker volume is listed as healthy, RAW, or unallocated. If it shows the correct capacity but Windows hangs when you try to open it, the drive may have developing read errors. Do not format, initialize, or run CHKDSK because that can make recovery harder. If the files matter, the safest next step is to clone the drive first and work from the clone.
The key issue here is not the 1% life estimate itself but the 1.42 million Load Cycle Count, which is extremely high and means the heads have parked and unloaded an enormous number of times. A drive can still report zero bad sectors and then fail suddenly because SMART cannot predict every mechanical or electronic failure. If the data matters, make a verified backup first and replace the drive, especially since it has been running 24/7 for years.
