have to say I just thought this was going to be a joke and someone had superimposed some bluegrass over some death metal or vice versa, so I was pleasantly surprised

It is not true that everybody finds it easy but I understand there might be a sort of “content bias” because the USX material we have available is just mind-blowing (Yngwie, Eric Johnson, etc.). Actually, I’d dare say the DOWNSTROKE escape is intuitively easier but some people seem to (pointlessly) think less of it (poor Al Di Meola xD ). In my case, the only way I have found to kinda function in a USX context is to flex my hand and use a rotational motion with a key trick: your fingernails have to touch the surface of the guitar. I can’t say that’s the only way to do it but it’s the only method that’s worked specifically for me. On another note, how’s your DOWNSTROKE escape? Have you tried it? Chances are it works more naturally for you.

Drew: 60 guitars at $2k I’m far from an expert but this is how I see it: I don’t think they really care about what happens with those masterbuilt guitars and the situation is a little more straightforward: they immediately legitimized their entire lineup by associating themselves with the Fender Custom Shop and the 60 fancy guitars sound like a moderate PR investment regardless of whether they’ll be able to sell them because the real moneymaker most frequently is the assembly line. Also, they don’t need to convince the world that John Cruz can build a good Strat but his endorsement sells the idea that they are not the stereotypical low-quality dropshipping sweatshop. Moreover, they don’t really need Cruz to establish the standards and attention to detail they are starting to follow as that’s literally how overseas mid-tier companies like Sire and Eastman (the latter a little higher-end) operate (although they also needed Marcus Miller and Larry Carlton as fancy names to legitimize their brand). Similarly, on the Fender side, the real threat is not on the custom shop because the lifestyle status of the brand will probably last forever. Instead, the fight is happening at the lower tiers where the profit margins are bigger, which has led them to invest more in the Mexican catalog (nitro-finished Charvels!) as well as the Indonesian Standard line. The dilemma is that “improved overseas manufacturer with a Custom Shop” sounds a lot cooler than “Indonesian Fender.” Finally, I don’t

Hi guys. Do you have any examples of ways to practice UPSTROKE escapes? I know thats kind of weird everyone seems to find this easy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can’t tell for sure as I’m not an expert but I’ve always noticed a sort of “filter” on accelerated videos that disappear when played at the “real” tempo. The video looks so natural when played at 0.8x.

Hey David- Mike’s core motion is USX as you have no doubt noticed. We can quibble about how your form is different than Mike’s but that’s looking too closely at the small picture at this step. What’s more important is that the core motion itself is fast and feels easy. Your platform Gypsy-style USX video looks quite nice, includes some complex alternate and sweep combinations, and is not “sloppy” at all. It’s just not super speedy. You have a membership, so I’d make a critique in your account, rather than here on the forum. We’re happy to take a look at your motion fundamentals!
