I’m eating oatmeal with raspberries right now from a variety released by Cornell many years ago. I started the stand about 35 years ago and maintain it only by pulling out bindweed and mulching- bindweed is a bitch. The berries are not exceptional but plenty tasty when dead ripe. The variety is a survivor here and primocain types are the only ones I consider worth growing in my climate. No SWD this season- the crazy weather has been good for one thing. However, I’m only harvesting my raspberries because I have so little stonefruit this year, otherwise I usually only eat them as pick them. The radical April temp swing and subsequent excessive rain kept my harvest lower than it has been in decades. The only berries I consider worth the time to harvest in a normal year are black currants and blueberries, although I have been managing a couple of blackberry varieties, including Navajo for the last few years and will bring some into the house. I think I will order some Triplecrown plants this winter- they used to be very productive for me, but brambles do tend to get viral infections here that render them useless after a few years.

It sucks here. I had 4, gave away 3 to friends and family- all in xl containers and all suck. I put cascade gold and crimson treasure in 20g bags this spring and expect them to do well. I had a Joan J in a 10g bag last year and it had a great primocane crop. I don’t think it’s the container. It’s just raspberry shortcake. Or it needs more than 2 years to get settled and I don’t have the space to bother with that, neither do the people I gave them to.

I have raspberry shortcake in a container and I don’t care for it. Floricane only crop and not particularly good. I assumed because it was in a container as raspberries like to run free but I’ll probably just remove it.

That is really frustrating. I remember all your mushroom pictures last year! Should you try again, I found Mountain Mushroom had better prices and customer service than northspore.

I’m no expert, but I wouldn’t expect any perennial not to bloom. It just delays the bloom a little.

Very cool, didn’t know that. I wish I had picked some this year, I think it was ready and would have helped. But, seeing as I’m a first time asparagus grower, I just was fervently following all the rules I read online about no picking until year 3!

Ha yeah I heard that term before. I’m always a bit nervous because for certain plants doing that will kill the flowers for the year. But NY ironweed dies to the ground every year and comes back from the roots so I imagine that wouldn’t affect the flowers

Wow that’s really great info and Beautiful berries. I’ve been frustrated and wondering why my everbearings have had virtually no fruit since early summer. I fertilized a lot in Spring and then stopped. And, I had issues with containers that I experimented giving more nitrogen containing to (in organic forms) just busting out intense greenery and few berries. I had Masterblend strawberry, I have been thinking about giving them all some now, might try and maybe I’ll try that once a month starting with blooming next year.

Marta from reallygoodplants.com had black prince and galacia last year and many other varieties.

@Buckeye Do you notice a bloom time difference between oracle and javids? I have an oracle and nikita’s pride that are a few years older than the javids , but they bloom about 4-5 days earlier than the javids and have never produced any fruit. I think it’s a late frost thing and those few days make a difference. This year the frost was really late and nothing produced.

I’m considering bud grafting now… it’s probably crazy at least here in Zone 5b. You can wait until spring to great onto them, but if they have no leaves left, you could even do something to save them now if they’re valuable to you.
