I think that can be at least partially explained by the fact that late cancellations are a regular aspect of business bookings on many routes. While allowances are made for typical levels sometimes they end up with more seats than expected. Dropping in a few extra reward seats avoids the undesirable route of lowering cash fares at the last minute.

JDB wrote: @supergraeme – Avios availability is never as linear as revenue inventory, but particularly so on ‘tag’ routes such as the two you mention. As a long standing watcher of the Brazil/Argentina tag route the availability shifts regularly between GRU/GIG and EZE even from the initial T-355 allocation and at regular intervals. Also, the fact there is availability on both individual legs does not necessarily mean there is availability for the whole route. Any additional availability from the BAPP CV will yield yet another answer. Good luck, hopefully your seats will reappear. It’s so true isn’t it? You can never assume a thing. Occasionally you find days with elevated cash rates right up to a few days before or even on the day still have extra seats come up for avios if you are watching closely. In Club Europe you can even have two or three seats open up suddenly, even when cash tickets are right near the top of their prices. I guess that’s might happen if they are trying to get CE seats reserved in precise multiples of four, and either don’t want to, or aren’t convinced it would sell, to cut the cash rates.
I’ve also now got a (random) 23% off autumn stays banner on my IHG homepage! Perhaps they’re trying to make up for leaving me out of the 100% bonus points offer for the 3rd or 4th time now. *Looks like you have to book on the app and the Railcard rate does still seem to be cheaper on eligible nights.
Hi Charlie, Looks like LHR-SYD is broken again. Also noticed when it was working that it was showing no availability for Sept 2027 despite there being some when trying to make a booking.
Still not had this but it’s not urgent is it? Unfortunately my 1st stay is a 4 nighter. But it looks like I’ll earn around 30k points from the rest of my stays in the offer period.
As if by magic, 2 articles from Rhys now live
Are the seats now showing in the app? If you can still see them at OLCI they should appear on your BP.
Slightly ironic that although EZE is now direct, as it’s sharing with SCL instead of GIG it will still only have a half share of reward seats. Good news for GIG in that respect as it now gets a full quota. Will be interesting to see if they do anything with the GIG flight times or just leave the aircraft sitting on the ground for 11 hours.

I have started the online check in but the room type is exactly the same as what I have booked and invites me to pay for a room upgrade. Even as a diamond member upgrades (if at all) at the Metropole have been underwhelming. The lounge is good though. We never do online check-in (unless it’s a one-nighter at a Hampton arriving late). Agree with this, I’ve had several occasions in London where I’ve been upgraded for free after check in time has started or when I’ve enquired at the desk. However if you check in online then that’s the room you get. I’d leave it until you get there.
Thanks for posting this. As someone flying BA to South America next year makes interesting reading. Not sure I now fancy the 17 hour plus flight back from SCL though when it was direct in the past
why don’t you just check in online?
Recently completed an Australia trip that ended up being LHR-KUL-SYD-KUL-LHR all on Malaysia and I’d highly recommend them based on those flights. It may not be the flashiest offering in the air, but the service was consistently excellent and the aircraft themselves (A350 / A330) both comfortable. Was originally meant to come back from KL on Oman via Muscat but a broken seat put paid to that. Oman reps in KL and were great, took them about 30 minutes to get me on a direct flight with Malaysia. So while some have had a less positive experience, I was suitably impressed.
