When we bought Rendezvous 25 seasons ago, there was no basket in the Raycor strainer. The boat previously operated on the south shore of Long Island (under the name Quiet Storm ) and had a fancy strainer on the outside of the hull. Was an easy fix and I empty the basket each fall when I winterize the engine. One time I found a live crab - about 1/2" in diameter. Wondered how long it had been living in the basket - it certainly did not get there as a 1/2" crab.

Nick, What do you mean by doesn’t quite fit? Are they both a little tight? If so, I would check the condition of the female thread in the deck and see that it is not bunged up if it is take a small wire wheel and a drill motor and go around the inside of it a few times and try it again , just a suggestion. I don’t see how so many attempts could not fit properly. There’s not that many sizes of the threads. Check for any inperfections on the male or female side and alter to suit. This thread does not seal the opening, the O-ring does, all this thread does is hold the ring down. Brian

Cutting and installing a new gasket might offer a chance to cut it a fraction of inch longer and reduce the size of the gap at the top. -- Bob

I am searching for a replacement desk cap. I have now ordered two, one from the Rigging Shoppe in Toronto and another from WhiteWaterMarine Depot. Neither quite fit. Don who tried to help tells me that the thread on the ones he found have a finer thread than the one I have. My Nonsuch 30U is from 1990 and was one of the last to be made by Hinterholler. I have measured and estimated and what should have fit hasn’t. I attach photos. Can anyone help? Thanks Rob, I’ve got the same kind of a problem except for where it’s coming from hatch over the salon. I’ll have to check for that gap and see where it is and because the rubber looks OK but I never located where it butts. Thanks for the video, Brian.

Hi, At the raft-up a few weeks ago, I mentioned a leaky window experience I had during the torrential rain we experienced at the Rendezvous. Gary Forster, suggested that I check the orientation of Soave’s window gaskets before looking at re-bedding the window frames. ( HERE ) is a video of what I found… Yes, Soave’s windows all have relatively new gaskets. Unfortunately they were installed with the ends meeting at the bottom of the window instead of on the top. Glad that Gary pointed me in the right direction for a relatively easy fix. Thought this might helpful for others that experience occasion window leaks. Rob…

A new boat was someone else’s old boat just before you bought it. Nonsuches tend to be loved and kept until the owner can no longer sail and so they can often come with some deferred maintenance. Mine did. So the first few years of ownership are kind of the “discovery years”. A captain should know every inch of his boat. (I’m still trying to figure out what the Omega 13 device does that I found under a seat cushion.) But it takes time to accumulate that knowledge. I don’t think you need to feel stupid about something that was missed by a professional mechanic or surveyor. They are the ones who should feel stupid. You should be feeling lucky that nothing worse came of it. And right now I feel lucky that my strainer is transparent and is the first thing you see right inside of the access hatch. (Though I’m actually acutely aware of strainers because most of my boat ownership has been on rivers where we pick up stuff all the time in our intakes.) But what am I missing that I haven’t learned about yet? Time will tell.

Hi, I wasn’t going to post this because, I’m embarrassed to have been this stupid, but here goes… Background - This is my 3rd season with Soave. I pay the boatyard ( where Soave winters) to winterize Soave’s engine because it’s an easy box to check on the form and doesn’t cost much. Soave’s raw water flow has always been good. Her sea strainer is on the starboard side beyond her hot water tank ( hard to get to.). I 'm not sure why, but assumed that winterization included checking for debris in the sea strainer. Bad assumption. After the Rendezvous and seeing a number of boats experience cooling issues, I decided to check Soave’s raw water strainer. I checked, just for grins, since flow is good and weeds are not a problem in the area we sail. It is something I knew I hadn’t personally verified, and I didn’t expect to find a problem. When I checked the strainer I discovered the basket was missing ! At some point, either prior to my purchasing, or perhaps as part of the annual winterization someone forgot to put the basket back in. Now that I know, I’ll replace the strainer and clean out the heat exchanger, replace the impeller, and do an extra thorough flush of the system. The reason for posting is ; I was one of the approximately 50% of owners at the Rendezvous that have owned their boats for less than five years. Sea strainer is on the checklist posted on the INA website… I used the checklist, but I skipped the sea strainer because it is in the winterization section. Hopefull

I’m with Thor on this one. I fabricated a fiberglass reinforced ( painted) plywood box that’s secured on all sides with screws for the start battery. The box is screwed down to a glass reinforced based next to the engine just after of main cabin. House batteries are under the stbd setter and secured to glasses ply wood base. New Victron batteries has an offset clip that fits into base of battery and then secured into base. Ventilation hole for cables and air along with a plywood spacer that’s removed when I need to remove the battery. Made it 5/6 yrs ago and it’s held perfectly . No straps.

I’m looking forward to this event. Recent developments I’ve been watching and hearing will make the presentation especially interesting for me. I doubt any of this will be directly addressed, but I’ll be listening for hints about the future. Over the last several years NTG has been buying US sailmakers. Many of us have worried they might have achieved a level of dominance that will hurt competition ( both price and quality ). Doyle is owned by NTG, but they still operate independently. There is a rumor that North Sails has experienced more talent churn than usual this year. Nonsuch sails are mostly broad-seam constructed (panel sewn together). Sails for high performance boats are molded. Molded sails are stronger, and important for larger high performance boats. Labor saving technology for molded sails is making them cheaper to build. Some think they will soon be less expensive to build than broad-seam sails. It remains to be seen if a molded sail gives a Nonsuch any meaningful advantage, since our masts bend long before much stress can be place on the sail fabric… but if the molded sail is less expensive it may be a competitive choice. That’s a crazy game-changing thought ! It’s not the material that make the sail… it’s the design. One of the few independent competitors to North Sails is Elvstrøm Sails. They have a competing molded sail manufacturing process that is being used to supply sails for many new boats built in Europe. There is some speculation that Elvstrøm may be
