In the olden days you used to get a watch for long service, or at least when you retired. Maybe some still do. I didn't but my small team did have a collection and I'll add some to it, so I have some money to spend. What to buy??? Well the budget is in the hundreds not the thousands, which maybe makes it easier. I am dabbling in my first Kickstarter project. Sadly not mine, but I like the cut of the brand owners jibb, and was instantly drawn into his designs. He’s already listening to his backers and is making changes which consesus has agreed to. Early renders of the working prototypes below. Changes agreed include case finishing, dial text, and AR coating. Other suggested changes tbc. It’s low cost therefore I’m happy to take risk. I’m as intrigued by the process as with the outcome. For my 60th birthday I was given a Stuart Models oscillating steam engine kit. My son-in-law had been asking what I was going to make on my lathe next, so I should have realised what he was planning. When they say kit, it isn't quited like a lego or airfix kit. Decided with my deteriorating eyesight that my Garrick Regulator is now too difficult to read the time at a glance as the hour hand is obviously small. So nice Mr. Garrick has agreed to swop it for an S7 (more conventional dial) with the usual options of finish. Have to wait about 15 months or so for delivery but that’s ok. Seems looking forward they‘re going to be concentrating on the higher end models only as it seems clients after the cheaper (?) versions piss around too much altering... Doing a swapsie

But of course I will, so I'm going to see if I can breathe some life back in this ... Now the sharp eyed out there may just be able to make out a couple of light scratches on the mineral crystal. And the back ... Nice and clean. So we can see this has a 7802 movement and was manufactured in September 1972. I've not had the back off this yet, but I know something is not good. The crown pulls out ok to the hand setting... Citizen Cosmotron, probably shouldn't bother with this one

These movements are infamous for having issues with the keyless works which wore significantly over time. Perhaps not a problem when parts were plentiful but to anyone now rocking horse teeth are more common than a working one. Other than this, they are built just like any other A. Schild movement, well put together, straightforward to service and with a date jumper... A. Schild 2066

Then I came to assessing my watch collection with the old "what if" question; would my lot had been any different if I'd bought a Seiko Turtle earlier; if I hadn't bought "that" would I still have...
