first time closing my pool, do i need to blow out the lines?

so i finally decided to close the pool myself this year instead of paying someone to do it. i've been reading a bunch of different things and some people say you have to blow out the lines with a shop vac or compressor and some say you can just use antifreeze and call it a day. i'm in ohio so we do get hard freezes, probably down to the single digits some winters. not sure which way to go or if i need both, any help would be appreciated.

First time closing an above ground pool, not sure where to start

I've been managing the chemicals all summer but winterizing is new territory for me. The pool is a 15,000 gallon oval and I live in zone 6 so we do get hard freezes. I know I need to drop the water level and blow out the lines but I'm not sure how far below the skimmer I should go, or whether I need to add a winterizing algaecide on top of the shock. Any advice from people who've done this a few times would be appreciated.

First time closing a pool, not sure when to actually do it

I live in Ohio and temps have been all over the place this fall, anywhere from 55 to 75 depending on the week. Someone told me to wait until the water is consistently below 60 degrees before closing, but I'm not sure if that means air temp or water temp. Also wondering if I should be adjusting my chemicals now to prep for closing or if that happens right at the end. Any advice would be helpful, I don't want to mess this up heading into winter.

Weird humming from my pump when temps dropped last night

Noticed my hot tub pump started making this low humming noise after we had that cold snap a few nights ago. It runs fine during the day but around midnight when temps dip into the low 40s it gets louder, almost like it's straining. Water temp and jets seem normal so I'm not sure if this is a cavitation thing or just the motor not liking the cold. Has anyone dealt with this before winter really sets in, or should I just get a tech out now before it turns into something bigger?

Pump making a grinding noise when I first start it up for the day

It only does it for maybe the first 30-60 seconds after startup, then smooths out and runs fine the rest of the day. Trying to figure out if this is something I should deal with before closing the pool for the season or if I can just drain and winterize and worry about it in the spring. My gut says don't ignore it but I also don't want to pull the motor apart right before I'm shutting everything down anyway. Anyone dealt with something similar?

Need advice: How do you fit bright color-blocked jackets into a low-key daily wardrobe?

Hey everyone, Huge fan of the show here. I'm looking to pick up a piece inspired by the AFC Richmond training gear—specifically this Ted Lasso S04 Rainbow Stripes Jacket . I love the vintage athletic vibe and the rainbow chest panel, but since it has such a distinct sportswear look, I’m trying to figure out how to style it casually so it feels like authentic street fashion rather than a full match-day kit. A few questions for anyone who wears retro track jackets or TV merch: - Would... Read more

Closing timing question - temps dropping but pool still in use

We're in mid-October here in NC and the water is sitting right around 62 degrees, but my teenagers are still insisting on using the pool on warmer days. I know the general rule is to close when temps consistently stay below 60, but I'm trying to figure out if there's any real harm in waiting another week or two if they're still swimming occasionally. My concern is that algae growth slows way down at these temps anyway, so as long as I keep the chemistry dialed in, I'm not sure what the rush... Read more

Sand filter pressure spiking way earlier than usual this season

I'm getting a pressure spike to about 20 psi above my clean baseline after only 3-4 days, which used to take me two weeks or more. Filter is maybe 4 years old and I did replace the sand last spring. Wondering if the issue is channeling, or if my laterals could be cracked and letting sand through. Haven't pulled the head yet but I'm leaning toward doing a full inspection before I close up for the season rather than just backwashing and hoping it holds.

How do I size a heat pump correctly for my pool?

I’m looking into getting a heat pump for my pool, but I’m confused about what size I actually need. Is it based on the pool's volume, surface area, or something else? Any tips for sizing it correctly so I don’t waste money on the wrong one?

Closing the pool for the first time and not sure where to start

My husband and I finally got a pool put in last spring so this is our first time going through the closing process. We live in Ohio so I know we need to winterize before it gets too cold, but I'm not sure at what point temps-wise we should actually be doing the chemical treatment vs. actually covering it. I've been reading conflicting things about whether you lower the water level before or after blowing out the lines. Any advice from people who've done this a few times would really help.

Sand filter making a grinding noise when pump first kicks on

Had this happen twice now at startup this week, lasts maybe 5-10 seconds then goes quiet and runs fine the rest of the day. Pressure is holding steady around 12 PSI and backwash looks clean, so I dont think it's a media issue. My gut says the laterals are fine and this might be something with the multiport valve internals starting to wear - spider gasket maybe. Anyone dealt with this going into closing season and had it get worse over winter if left alone, or is it usually fine to monitor... Read more
